When the Dallas Mavericks started to feel better about their injuries and did well, they had a bad night while playing against the Portland Trail Blazers. This darkened things for them even if they were doing good lately. The Mavs faced a double blow as rookie starting center Dereck Lively II succumbed to an ankle injury, reminiscent of a setback he faced in December, and Grant Williams limped to the locker room after a concerning incident involving his right leg.

A double blow against the Blazers

The Mavericks, with Kyrie Irving‘s big comeback after 12 games out were ready to win against the Blazers. Irving got rid of the dust and showed an amazing 29-point performance. He helped the Mavs get a strong lead. But then the tides changed as hope turned into trouble. The rookie player, Dereck Lively II, who couldn’t play for four games because of a left ankle sprain had another bad injury in the third part of the game. His not being there might make Dwight Powell and Markieff Morris have to do more work.

In a strange turn of events, the night played out as two different stories for the Mavericks. While Irving showed his skills and the team first took off, bad luck with getting hurt came again. It looked like it could stop their progress. Lively did a good job even though he didn’t score much. He had a +23 rating in only 19 minutes of play, which made his injury that much more sad for the Mavericks team.

Jason Kidd’s Strategic Move with Dereck Lively II

Jason Kidd showed his coaching skills when he saw the hidden talent in rookie Dereck Lively II. At first, Maxi Kleber was the center at the start of the season. But soon Kidd realized he made a mistake after seeing how well Lively played when he came in as a substitute against San Antonio Spurs. The rookie’s stat line of 16 points, 10 rebounds, one assist, one block, and one steal spoke volumes, prompting Kidd to make a decisive change in the lineup.

After he was chosen as the main center player in the second game of the season against the Brooklyn Nets, Lively has shown to be very important for the Mavericks. Even though he had a hard time, his special mix of protection close to the basket and fast play near the rim makes him different from other tall guys on his team.

More than just giving stats, Lively has built a strong connection with star player Luka Doncic. This adds extra good things to the team’s collaboration. Hoping to match the effect Tyson Chandler had in the Mavericks’ 2011 winning year, Kidd and fans are sure about what Lively might achieve someday.
