If the NBA Draft Lottery were a Netflix thriller, Monday night would’ve been the mid-season cliffhanger that left everyone screaming at their TVs.
In the span of just a few minutes, the Dallas Mavericks pulled off a miracle so absurd that even the Vatican would want to investigate. With just a 1.8% chance, Dallas snatched the No. 1 overall pick like a thief in the night. Cue Twitter, Reddit, and your uncle in the group chat all yelling the same word: “Rigged.”
But wait—it gets better. Or worse. Or just funnier, depending on your tolerance for chaos.

Before a single envelope was opened, ESPN’s Brian Windhorst basically summoned a storm with a calm, casual, completely nonchalant prediction that turned out exactly right. “Wouldn’t it be fascinating if the number 10 envelope opened and there wasn’t a Dallas Mavericks logo in it… meaning they jumped up?“
Now, hold on. This ain’t Miss Cleo. This is Wendy—a guy who’s known for being weirdly accurate with cryptic NBA stuff. But even for Windy, this felt less like a prediction and more like a spoiler from someone who peeked at the script.
But just when ESPN looked like it was cooked harder than a burnt steak, Mallika Andrews came flying in with the most unintentionally convincing defense of all time.

The moment Dallas won the No. 1 pick, Mallika Andrews had a reaction that belonged in a Jordan Peele movie. She stood up, flailed around like she had just seen a ghost dunk from Vince Carter, and looked at the camera like she’d just been told Chris Paul won MVP. It was raw. It was chaotic. And it was honest. And most importantly, it proved they had no idea what was about to happen.
What’s your perspective on:
Did the Mavericks' lottery win prove the NBA Draft is more drama than sport?
Have an interesting take?
If this was a heist movie, Windhorst would be the mastermind, but Mallika just tripped the alarm by accident and ruined the whole plan. Her full-body disbelief practically screamed: “Wait, WHAT? They actually got the pick???” Which turned into ESPN’s version of “Exhibit A” in the trial of public opinion. If this was rigged, nobody looped in poor Mallika.
Dallas wins big, NBA Loses the internet on the draft picks
Now let’s get serious for a second. This is the first time in 17 lottery attempts that the Mavericks actually jumped UP in the draft order. They had a 1.8% chance—basically the same odds your fantasy football team has of staying healthy all season. But against every mathematical law known to mankind, they landed the No. 1 pick.
That means one thing: Cooper Flagg is likely headed to Dallas.
This is the same team that traded Luka Doncic to the Lakers earlier this year in a move so confusing it made the “Kawhi laugh” look normal. Fans wanted Nico Harrison fired. Luka’s signature appeared on a “Fire Nico” jersey. It was chaos in Big D.
But now? Nico Harrison is the king of Dallas, Flagg is possibly the new face of the franchise, and the Mavericks’ PR department can finally get some sleep.
Meanwhile, the Utah Jazz, who had the worst record in the league and a juicy 14% chance at the top pick, got pushed all the way to fifth. Same for the Wizards, who slid to No. 6 despite also having 14% odds. Oh yes—1985, the original year of the “frozen envelope conspiracy,” came roaring back into the conversation. That year, the Knicks landed Patrick Ewing, and people still believe the envelope was chilled to make it easy to pick.

And here we are, exactly four decades later, and folks are still yelling “RIGGED!” louder than Drake at a Raptors game.

Even LeBron James got in on the action. Remember—he’s now teammates with Luka in L.A., so the fact that Dallas got a generational replacement like Flagg? Yeah, the irony is practically poetic. Kevin Love chimed in, too, looking like someone who just found out his Uber driver is his ex.
Add all that to Rick Welts, the Mavs CEO who was also in charge of the 1985 draft lottery, being in the room again? Yeah… the internet definitely noticed. Let’s be real—the NBA Draft Lottery is always a little sketchy, but that’s part of its charm. It’s a game within the game, like the MCU’s post-credit scenes, but for GMs in suits.

And if the Mavericks don’t draft Flagg? Prepare for the conspiracy sequel. So yeah, whether you think it’s rigged, random, or just ESPN’s Brian Windhorst unlocking his inner Doctor Strange, one thing’s for sure:
Mallika Andrews may have just accidentally saved the network from a PR disaster—and given us the most GIF-able moment of the year.
