Amid the Memphis Grizzlies‘ comeback run this season, the team eyes a reshuffle. In the last season, the Tennessee side was all over the place, struggling with multiple injuries and a lengthy suspension of their star player, Ja Morant. It ultimately took a toll on the team, pushing them to the 13th seed. However, this season, the story is entirely different. The team managed to grab the second seed with a thumping 18-9 record. Most importantly, they aim to have a fresh ascent ahead of the trade deadline by sending out a star guard.

It’s none other than Marcus Smart. The star guard has already missed 10 games dealing with ankle and knee injuries this season. Moreover, he has recently suffered a shoulder injury as well. So, Smart’s inconsistent appearance may continue. Amid this situation, NBA Insider Evan Sidery reported that the Grizzlies would most likely involve the guard in their trade talk if they look to make an “aggressive move” in the trade market.

Above all, Sidery added that Marcus Smart’s $20.2 million contract will enable the team to rope in some of the best players in the business. Since the league lifted the trade restrictions, plenty of players have been available in the trade market. Notably, some of the big names like Jimmy Butler, Brandon Ingram, Zach LaVine, Cameron Johnson, and many more are making the heading now and then.

Looking at the stacked frontcourt of the Grizzlies, they may not need a big man but a playmaker or an explosive guard. Butler and LaVine could be a great option for the team to look out for. However, on the other end, Marcus Smart hasn’t had a great run ever since he left the Boston Celtics family. Will this trade put Smart’s career at risk?

A rough patch for Marcus Smart

For the first nine seasons of his career, Marcus Smart played his heart and soul for the Boston Celtics. It looked as if he would retire in the C’s uniform. The star also helped the team reach closer to the championship multiple times. However, one night, the team abruptly decided to trade him out to the Grizzlies without any heads up.

It indeed took a toll on the star. Speaking of it, he said, “I did cry. I have cried. I’ve cried because of the special relationship I have with the guys… when my mom passed away, they were there. They’ve been through tough times with me, so it was tough. Not only that, I’ve been there my whole life, so that was tough.”

Apart from that, in the same year, the Celtics managed to win the championship while Smart struggled with injuries. In the 2023-24 season, Smart played only 20 games dealing with a finger fracture and abdominal soreness. In the very next season, the team managed to rise up to the second seed, and now he is on the trade block.

Truly a devastating time to be in Smart’s shoes!
