The longtime Pacers center explained that team leadership had repeatedly assured him he would be “taken care of” financially after helping the team succeed. He noted how several teammates received contract extensions following the team’s Eastern Conference Finals run, creating an environment where winning was rewarded with security.

Turner described the consistent messaging he received throughout their Finals season. “Everybody gassed me up all year long and said you’re going to get taken care of,” Turner revealed. He mentioned that players like Pascal Siakam, T.J. McConnell, and Aaron Nesmith had all secured new deals after the team’s previous success.

The situation changed dramatically when Haliburton suffered his Achilles injury during the NBA Finals. Turner stated that the front office and ownership “just basically changed our mind” about keeping him. The organization’s stance shifted to needing to “pivot” from their previous commitments.

The financial gap between the two sides became significant during negotiations. Turner sought a contract worth around $27 million annually, while the Pacers offered approximately $23 million per year. This difference would have pushed Indiana into the luxury tax for the first time in franchise history.
