Six-time NBA All-Star Jimmy Butler has been the talk of the town. The Miami Heat star has been the biggest name on the trade block this season and it is only obvious that the Heat will be receiving a lot of inquiry calls from other teams as the 35-year-old still remains one of the best players in the league.

As per ESPN’s Shams Charania, a trade could happen much sooner than expected as according to sources, Butler prefers a trade before the February 6th deadline. Although he hasn’t requested a trade formally, this is believed to be the present situation for the Miami star. Furthermore, Butler has a $49 million contract with the Heat this season, and a $52 million player option for 2025-26, which he intends to decline.

As per reports, Butler is open for moves to the Mavericks, Suns, Warriors, and Rockets. However, the L.A. Lakers are also eyeing the Heat veteran to bolster their team and the present situation presents them with a great opportunity to build a good core around their existing stars LeBron and Davis. Rob Pelinka and the Lakers are buyers in this trade market and their name has already been linked to several players, including Jimmy.

The Lakers have had a shaky start to the season and have multiple pieces that they are willing to use in order to make their roster competitive again. And bringing in a star power would certainly bolster their playoff aspirations. However, can the Lakers pave a path for Jimmy Butler? Amid interest from multiple teams, including the likes of Golden State. Let’s find out.

Can the Los Angeles Lakers land Miami Heat star Jimmy Butler?

The theoretical answer to this question is a yes, but it would not come without a huge cost for the Los Angeles Lakers. For starters, the Lakers and the Heat cannot take more money back in a deal, which greatly complicates the matter as per journalist Trevor Lane. This would hence require the Lakers to send several players the other way just to match the salaries.

A deal that could bring Butler to Los Angeles would need to involve several Lakers’ rotational players for the $49 million Butler is set to make this season. Additionally, this would mean they would have to trade at least three from their pool of players, including D’Angelo Russell, Rui Hachimura, Jarred Vanderbilt, and Austin Reaves. But, even if the Lakers agree to make the move, it would massively hamper their depth.

Not to mention, Vanderbilt, who is yet to set foot on the court this season, might just be someone the Heat don’t want as they are looking for win-now players and not players for the future. Although Miami is listening to offers, they don’t seem to be in a hurry and will only agree if their conditions are met, meaning the Lakers will have to give up a good chunk of their rotation to even make this trade a possibility. But, you never know what can happen before the deadline, so let’s keep an eye on this one.
