The Jimmy Butler trade saga is picking up momentum one day after another. The latest turn of events, saw the Miami Heat superstar suspended for the third time this month. This suspension is “indefinite” after Butler walked out of the shoot-around upon learning he wasn’t going to start the game. This has further ignited the possibility of him reuniting with former teammate Joel Embiid! At Philadelphia.

According to Yahoo Sports’ Vince Goodwill, “I’ve heard that Philly quietly could be a suitor for Jimmy Butler…theoretically, it would be a Jimmy for Paul George swap. I believe that Embiid is pushing for them to reacquire Jimmy. George was told by management we wouldn’t trade your year one of this deal.” Sixers superstar Joel Embiid is the one pushing for this move in the hopes of playing alongside Butler once again. Moreover, the one star who’ll be switching cities could be Philly’s latest acquisition, Paul George!

However, while the Philadelphia 76ers are emerging as potential suitors the offering doesn’t come without problems. First of which is mentioned by Goodwill, who stated that the Sixers management told George while inking the deal that they wouldn’t trade him in year one of the deal. With that being said unless it’s something that is in writing, nothing is technically stopping the 76ers from making the move.

Another complication might be Miami looking to keep long-term money off their books. That is because the Heat are looking to splash big in the free agency of 2026! George at the moment is making upwards of $50 million each of the next two seasons and has a played option for the 2027-28 season worth $56.6 million. That isn’t going to fit right with Miami. However, even if a deal somehow goes through will it be beneficial for the Sixers? Let’s find out.

Will reuniting with Jimmy Butler turn out to be a good decision for the Sixers?

Jimmy Butler’s stay in Philadelphia might have been a short one as the veteran superstar played just 55 regular season and 12 postseason games in 2018-19. However, in a brief time, he seems to have made a good bond with Joel Embiid. So, will a reunion yield good results for the Sixers? Well, that’s not quite simple.

First, Philadelphia is one of the worst teams in terms of shooting from beyond the arc. So, even though Butler shoots 36.1 percent from the deep, his 1.4 attempts per game are the major problem. George who’s likely to be traded is much more of a shooter, and switching him would further worsen their shooting woes, something they cannot afford.

Furthermore, there are off-court issues such as how quickly Butler can become disgruntled with an organization. We’ve witnessed that in Minnesota and now in Miami. So, unless the Sixers hope to get right back where they were prior to this season, with a max cap slot to use by hoping Butler opts out of his player option, there’s really not much that would change for them. Nonetheless, everyone will have their eyes on Jimmy Butler as the trade deadline is closer than ever before.
