The Oklahoma City Thunder have surprised everyone this season. While most were aware of OKC’s promise for the future, no one expected them to become the first seed in a fiercely competitive Western Conference this season. The Thunder have become legitimate contenders for the 2024 title, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Chet Holmgren leading the way. However, they are missing a veteran presence who can guide this young OKC roster during the postseason.
Now it looks like the Thunder’s hierarchy has found their veteran leader. According to The Athletics’ Shams Charania, “Oklahoma City is closing in on a trade to acquire Gordon Hayward from Charlotte.”

This is a hammer blow for the Golden State Warriors and the Los Angeles Lakers, who were interested in acquiring Hayward before the Thunder swooped in for him. This trade could especially hurt the Lakers, as they have already missed out on their primary trade target, Dejounte Murray.
Talks of Dejounte Murray’s trade to the Lakers have stalled, as the Hawks aren’t interested in a trade package involving D’Angelo Russell, Jalen Hood-Schifino, and a 2029 first-round pick. Now, with Hayward heading to the Thunder, the Lakers are looking out of options. However, Hayward’s trade could have a significant impact on the OKC Thunder, who have a legitimate chance of winning the title, unlike the Lakers.
How would Hayward impact OKC Thunder’s title ambitions?

Before the start of the 2023/24 season, the OKC Thunder had the second youngest roster in the entire NBA, with an average age of 24.12. Despite their youth, they have proven themselves as formidable competitors, emerging as one of the season’s standout teams. With more than 50 games being played, the Thunder occupy the top spot in the Western Conference standings, with 35 wins in 51 games. However, they lack a veteran presence who could provide guidance during the playoffs, a role that Gordon Hayward would fulfill.

Furthermore, Hayward is no slouch when it comes to play on the court. Despite being 33 years old, Hayward has averaged 14.5 points, 4.7 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 25 games this season. While Hayward has missed the last month due to a calf injury, reports suggest he is close to a return.
