NBA players are known for their on-court dominance and decision-making. With time, many superstars have showcased their brilliance in off-court ventures. From podcasts and TV shows to real estate and restaurant ownership, these stars thrive on staying informed and involved in various aspects of life. As luck would have it, options for these decorated athletes are broadening daily. The NBA’s Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA) recently opened up the opportunity for players to invest in WNBA teams.

The idea isn’t far-fetched either, as LeBron James has openly stated his desire to own an NBA team earlier. He has also expressed his desire to own a team in Las Vegas. While the CBA rules are fresh, players investing in major leagues isn’t new. In 2011 LeBron James invested $6.5 million in 2% of Liverpool FC of the Premier League in the United Kingdom. Today, his stake has nearly expanded 10 times the original value. In a recent update, Russell Westbrook is believed to follow in James’ footsteps.

Westbrook recently revealed his active involvement as a member of 49ers Enterprises, a group committed to acquiring full ownership of Leeds United of the Premier League.

Despite re-signing with the Los Angeles Clippers for a mere two-year $7.8 million deal, Russell was named the 14th most-paid athlete in the world. Upon confirming his stake, he joins golfers Jordan Spieth and Justin Thomas who also have shares in the team.

NBA players T.J. McConnell and Larry Nance Jr. have stakes in the team too. In his interview with Sportico, he says, “I was lucky enough to have conversations with some of the partners in this deal, who already have ownership.”

After the 2022-23 season, Leeds United, an English Premiere League team, was among the three clubs that faced relegation back to the English Championship League. 49ers Enterprises, the investment arm of the NFL’s San Francisco 49ers, has been one of the shareholders of Leeds United. In a significant development, according to ESPN, 49ers Enterprises has reached an agreement to acquire full control of Leeds United.

American investments in the English sport

American investors own three teams in the National League and four out of 12 Scottish Premiership clubs, accounting for approximately 27% of the English Football League. The ownership of Leeds United by the 49ers has made the leagues in England and Scotland attractive for investment, considering the increasing popularity of soccer in the US.

Like Los Angeles Lakers star LeBron James, several notable celebrities have established connections with English football leagues and clubs. For instance, Hollywood actor Ryan Reynolds is associated with Wrexham. Billionaire Stan Kroenke involves himself with Arsenal FC, while NFL player JJ Watt associates himself with Burnley FC.
