The San Antonio Spurs are in an upbeat mood. With Victor Wembanyama as their next Tim Duncan, they are on the lookout for other talents to build around him. Yet, this move from them could be a bit of a surprise to even the die-hard fans of the Spurs. It is no secret that they coveted LeBron’s teammate, who was quite a sensation in the last postseason.

This rookie extension is one of the biggest contracts that the conservative Spurs have dished out this off-season, but the Spurs are known to identify talents in a special way. Have they found their next Tony Parker in this 23-year-old?

A special season for San Antonio.

Since the time Kawhi Leonard left the Spurs, they have been a very mediocre team, to put it mildly. The addition of Victor Wembanyama has brought in the excitement that the Spurs have been missing. They are spotting and going after some genuine talents that could fit their conservative system. They wanted Austin Reaves, who some would say was the No.3 in the Lakers roster last year. But missing out on him, they have upgraded their guard, Devin Vassell, to a rookie max extension.

Adrian Wojnarowski reports that Devin Vassell would sign a five-year $146 million extension, prompting a slew of polarizing comments from the fans. One comment goes so far as calling it “the most random waste of money this off-season.”

Are the Spurs missing Dejounte Murray?

The year Ja Morant won the Most Improved Player of the Year award, which, according to LeBron, was a joke. As Ja was a lottery pick and a legitimate superstar. Dejounte Murray finished second on that list. He played with the Spurs for a six-year period when they saw a lot of changes happen. Dejounte was the one shining spot of that period who was coming out on his own. That’s why his trade to the Atlanta Hawks came as a shocker. Had he been with the Spurs, they wouldn’t be this desperate in their search for talents.

This will all change if Victor Wembanyama has a great season. All he has to do is to show the world that the hype and the promise are for real. Then automatically the Spurs will attract talents who would make them the contenders. Needless to say they still have Gregg Popovich, and there will be a new Spurs run.
