The New York Knicks are gearing up to host the Philadelphia 76ers for the third matchup between the two teams this season. Philly enters the game on a losing run, struggling to find their 4th win in the last 10 games. Regardless, the Knicks, yet again, enter a game shorthanded, anticipating the return of Julius Randle, who suffered a shoulder injury in late January.

Randle will miss his 18th straight game by sitting out against the Sixers, causing the star to skip on a few of the benefits outlined on his contract. Had he managed to play 65 games this season, he would be in line for $1.28 million in incentives.

However, the Knicks’ back office is presented with a silver lining in light of their star’s involuntary absence. With the current season’s fate decided, Randle’s bonus for the next season is considered “unlikely” as well, causing his cap hit to fall from $30.3 million to $28.9 million. With that, the Knicks will benefit from a tax variance, which will be equal to the amount of Randle’s bonus, which is slated to be applied to the team salary counting towards tax.

Randle is currently in middle of a 4 year contract, his player option siding him with the Knicks until the 2025 season. The extensive contract also includes incentives and benefits for Randle conditioned around his all star selection, all defensive selection and/or successfully helping the Knicks enter the playoffs (while playing 65 games). Every incentive sits at five percent of Randle’s base salary.

Last year, Randle managed to cash in both the 65-game and All-Star bonuses. However, as Randle misses one of them this year, the Knicks will get a breathing room by receiving a tax variance on the amount of Randle’s bonus.

When will Julius Randle return to action?

Randle rejoined the Knicks for their road trip early March and sparked signs of an early return. One that could see him on the court before OG Anunoby. However, he has since then been cleared for light contact.

The Knicks that lost the majority of its starters after Jalen Brunson exited the game in the first minute against Cleveland is up for a smooth plentitude.
