LeBron James was recently named the flag bearer for this year’s opening ceremony. The American contingent voted for the 39-year-old veteran, who will be making his fourth Olympic appearance. However, each country will have two designated flag bearers from each gender. Team USA just announced their female flag bearer, Coco Gauff, the 20-year-old tennis player, will lead the country alongside LeBron James. It seems that the Americans like to pair a veteran athlete with an upcoming star. In Tokyo, Sue Bird led the country alongside a much younger athlete, Eddy Alvarez. On the flip side, Coco Gauff seems more starstruck.

Now, as a 20-year-old athlete, LeBron would have been a part of her childhood. Why is that? Well, James’ career has now stretched over 21 years. Not only that, but Gauff even used to attend his games while James was in South Beach. “No, I’ve never met him. He DM’ed me once on Instagram like with words of encouragement and congratulations but I’ve never actually met him. I’ve seen him in person at a bunch of Miami Heat games when I was a kid and obviously some recent games. But I’ve never actually met him so, this is a cool kind of a circumstance to be meeting him and I guess I’ll actually get to know him a little bit.”, said Gauff.

It is certainly a proud moment for the youngster to be pairing up with a veteran like James. While Gauff is thrilled by the personal connection, James views this opportunity with a broader perspective. The four-time champ was proud of this opportunity and also saw this as a way to connect with other athletes, showcasing their unity. However, Gauff is more excited to be leading the country with one of the greatest players to have ever played the game.

Naturally, the young athlete is filled with excitement. She’s a young, upcoming tennis star and the first one to ever become a flag bearer at the Olympics. When it comes to deserving this opportunity, Gauff is worthy of this honor in more than one way.

Coco Gauff already has a decorated career

Gauff has seven singles titles under her name, along with nine in doubles. She started her career as early as the age of 15. Idolizing Serena and Venus Williams, Gauff played the elder Williams in the 2019 Wimbledon Championship. Surprisingly, the 15-year-old got past her idol to advance to the fourth round. Leading the American contingent in the Olympics will also be a highlight of her career. LeBron, on the other hand, was also a wonder child as a teenager.

It is safe to say that James can relate to Gauff’s appearance in the tennis world and what lies ahead in her future. Coco is quite excited to get insights from the King himself as she plans her interaction next week. It will be interesting to see the two lead the contingent on the 26th, followed by the USAB team taking on Serbia on Sunday.
