“The fact that they are picking teams and no one’s tried out,” Gilbert Arenas highlighted the biases within the Team USA’s roster. However, a major part of the coming USA squad was decided after they failed to secure a medal in 2023. Players like LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Stephen Curry have voiced their interest in representing the States at the 2024 Paris Olympics. However, the recent addition to the list has gripped fans with the most excitement.

According to Insider Shams Charania, Kyrie Irving deeply desires to represent the USA on the global platform. Following the instance, the crew at Gil’s Arena sat down to discuss the basketball aspect of Kyrie’s inclusion. Moreover, debating the throne of the starting role amongst Jalen Brunson, Stephen Curry, and Kyrie Irving, they cited concerns about their short frames.

However, Rashad McCants then points out that, Brunson, during the 2023 FIBA, was not being targeted in the post. As the narrative shifted back to the starting role, Arenas highlighted the potential diplomacy against Irving. The former NBA star claimed that Irving’s new deal with ANTA could hamper his chances in the starting lineup. He resonates that, Nike being the sponsor for Team USA, would want a squad that would heavily feature athletes endorsed by the brand. “Logistically, he has a new shoe company and Nike is not doing that,” Gilbert observes.

When it comes to bringing the best players on a single roster, talent can often take a backseat. What matters most is the coherence and chemistry among the players at hand. Last year, the Team USA Select Team, formed to train the main USA roster, displayed the same. In the two scrimmages, the select team outmaneuvered the top guys in both.

In light of the same, Kyrie can be a better fit for Team USA’s starting role than Steph. Having played with LeBron James, Kevin Durant, and Jayson Tatum (possible starters for Team USA) within the NBA, Kyrie brings an already established chemistry to the table.
