What went wrong with the Phoenix Suns this season? They had 3 All-Star caliber superstars on their team in Kevin Durant, Devin Booker, and Bradley Beal. Despite that, the Suns couldn’t make it past the regular season. But the front office, specifically James Jones, isn’t willing to pull the trigger on any major decisions yet. And that could spell trouble for a certain club in the West who’ve allegedly already begun changing their tune.
For months now, the rumor mill has suggested that Kevin Durant’s time with the Phoenix Suns is up. The weeks leading up to the trade deadline saw him linked with nearly every club in the league. However, nothing materialized then. Now, after the Suns failed to have a postseason, KD’s time at the club seems to be up. However, James Jones suggested something different when a reporter asked about their approach to dealing with Durant this summer.
“That hasn’t changed. The fact that we aren’t where we wanna be from a winning perspective means that we have to look at everything. But a lot of changes that we’ll make will be in the best interest of the team, and we evaluate all those things. And so Kevin, look, he had a tremendous season. Devin, Brad, those guys did great things individually. Right now, we’re just trying to figure out how to collectively move this team forward,” said the Suns GM.

Is Johnson hinting at Kevin Durant staying? Well, he didn’t exactly confirm or deny anything, really. But realistically, what options do they really have? Bradley Beal has a no-trade clause, so he’s not going anywhere. And as their all-time top scorer, the chances of them trading Devin Booker are slim. So, what can they do if they decide to rebuild?
Well, the obvious answer is to trade KD to another club for assets. And given how amazing Durant is, we’re sure they’ll receive a good deal. After all, a lot of clubs have shown interest in Durant. However, the fact that Jones seems unwilling to commit to the thought of trading KD does change things. Especially for a franchise that’s been linked to the Olympic Gold medalist for months at this point.

Houston Rockets’ interest in Kevin Durant takes a massive hit
Before James Jones’ recent revelation, ESPN’s Shams Charania told us that there was “mutual interest” between the Houston Rockets and Kevin Durant. “There is going to be a level of mutual interest—there has been already—with them and Kevin Durant with the Suns,” said Shams. It seemed like a great pairing with KD being there to help out the young core of the $4.9 billion franchise with his wisdom and experience in the league.

However, another insider recently came out to reveal that the Rockets’ interest in Durant may have waned. And the reason could potentially be the age gap between KD and Houston’s key players. “All season long on @TheSteinLine, we’ve been reporting that the Rockets’ next significant trade would not happen in-season (as proved true) and is unlikely to target Kevin Durant because the future Hall of Famer is not on the same timeline as Houston’s promising young core,” wrote NBA insider Marc Stein on X.

This, coupled with Jones’ statements from earlier, could mean KD to the Rockets is dead in the water. After all, if the Suns are still considering trying to keep Durant and the Rockets aren’t as interested as previously thought, then neither party will be pushing this deal forward. What does that mean for KD? It’s simple.

All these developments have cast a veil of uncertainty over the 2x NBA champion’s future. Even a week ago, KD leaving the Suns seemed like a done deal. Now, though, we wouldn’t be so sure. However, there’s still time before the off-season hits. And depending on how things go, another club might come calling for the NBA’s 8th all-time top scorer.
