2025 is going to be a special year. Be it the exciting draft class or the free agency market, both look stacked with the potential of unthinkable scenarios to unfold. And you can expect Kevin Durant‘s name to pop-up frequently alongside the likes of LeBron James, D’Angelo Russell, Alperen Sengun and Brandon Ingram, despite not entering free agency. Among all these, Durant has the chance of capitalizing the most due to his interesting contract situation.

Let’s say, he has a chance of getting a $64.3 million buff depending on what KD decides to do. Thanks to the new TV deal, the players’ pockets are going to get heftier and a year’s wait could see the Slim Reaper getting a heavier bag. The Suns star will be entering the final year of his contract, but there’s a catch.

According to Bobby Marks, ESPN NBA Front Office Insider, there is a strong possibility of Kevin Durant waiting till the offseason for an improved fortune. The 2-time NBA Finals MVP is already eligible for a $59.5 million extension but is set to reject that option. Instead, Durant could sign a two-year, $123.8 million deal to extend his stay in Phoenix once the eligibility kicks in next summer.

Following the Suns’ early exit from the Playoffs last season, noises were getting loud regarding a potential trade for KD. Though he called out those “lies” and vowed to stay in Arizona, the trade rumors persist thanks to the franchise’s financial stress. The Suns are already knee-deep in trouble, being $43 million over the first tax apron. So a sign and trade isn’t a far-fetched idea for Kevin Durant and the Suns’ mutual split. But what does KD think of it? He answered to that question himself.

Kevin Durant opens up about his contract extension

Hours before the Lakers versus Suns game, Kevin Durant was surrounded by the media discussing the various aspects of the game. One thing led to the other, and before he could realize it, the question regarding his contract extension sprang up.

The reporter asked whether Durant was willing to extend his deal by a year or wait till the following year to sign the better offer. “I’m not even thinking about numbers,” the unprepared forward said. “I’m playing on my contract really. Just focus on that. Just focus on the team. I’ve never really had a conversation with anybody about the contract, so just try to focus on basketball.”

When pressed a bit more, Durant confessed that he has been fortunate to have spent the past 18 years at the top position in the fiercely competitive league. The financial part of it has never been his concern. The 36-year-old further stated, “Just trying to be here. I’ve been doing. Just keep my body condition to get up and down the floor by playing pickup in the summer, get in the weight room. Yeah. Do the move throughout the summer as well.”

A glimpse of his hard work could be seen in the consecutive preseason games against the Pistons, where he scored 21 and 18 points, respectively. This season will be a major one for KD as it gives him another chance to redeem himself with a Championship win that has eluded him since leaving the Warriors. Kevin Durant knows it, so the fans can have enough optimism to see Mr. Easymoney bringing his A game.
