After eight seasons with the Los Angeles Lakers, LeBron James is ready for a new challenge. The 41-year-old superstar has chosen the Philadelphia 76ers for his 24th NBA season, reportedly accepting a significant 92% pay cut to make the move happen. Philadelphia landed one of the biggest names in basketball, and now James’ longtime agent has shed light on what ultimately made the Sixers an appealing destination for his client.

Rich Paul has a long history with Philadelphia, one that stretches well beyond his role as LeBron James’ longtime agent. His connection to the city goes back to his early relationship with Mitchell & Ness, the Philadelphia-based sports apparel company known for its throwback jerseys and vintage sportswear. He has reportedly spent years moving through the city’s neighborhoods. Still, when it came to James’ free-agency decision, Paul said he stayed out of the way and explained what played a key role.
“I think it was just about appreciation for him (LeBron James), you know? I think Philly is someone, it’s a place that appreciates their athletes, and you know, whenever he played here, even when he was on a different team, they always showed their appreciation for him,” Paul said to reporter Jason Dumas.
“And you know, it was his choice, and I wasn’t, you know, pushing him one way or the other. I think, obviously, Tyrese being here, Joel, some of the moves being made, you know, how the organization is positioned, you know, whenever he’s making a decision, you gotta look at everything from the top down, and obviously you know what comes with him when he comes to a city and to a place, and so, I think it’s an exciting time for them, you know, ultimately, I just had a job to do, you know, the same way I would do for any of my other clients, and so, I’m looking forward to the season, it should be a good one.”
Rich Paul addressed that point while discussing the circumstances surrounding LeBron James’ free-agency decision. Despite his personal ties to the area, Philadelphia was not initially viewed as a realistic destination. In fact, Paul said the Sixers had not even entered the conversation seriously before making one major move.
“We never heard from the Sixers because the Sixers never really thought there was even a chance,” Paul previously said. “No, we never even thought there was a chance.”
The 41-year-old had seriously considered walking away from basketball. After the season ended, retirement appeared to be a real possibility. Eventually, though, LeBron James realized the competitive fire was still there.
James was not looking for the biggest payday or making the move because of family considerations. He wanted another opportunity to compete for a championship and called it his “last decision.”
“I believe I can help make the Philadelphia 76ers a championship team, and I am so excited to energize a new fan base and start this incredible journey one last time,” James said.
For Rich Paul, the move carried an obvious personal significance. That history made LeBron James’ move to Philadelphia a full-circle moment for Paul.
But according to the longtime agent, his personal ties to the city never meant he was pushing his biggest client toward the Sixers.
