“Reggie Miller not exactly putting on a broadcasting clinic in these final minutes,” wrote Sports Illustrated media reporter Jimmy Traina during the Knicks-Celtics Game 1 matchup a few days ago. As it turned out, Traina was the one being generous, as several other analysts, and NBA fans, were criticizing Miller’s commentary throughout the game!

It wasn’t the first time that it happened, which is a surprise when you consider the fact that the former player of the Michael Jordan era has been with TNT since 2005, aka the same year he officially retired from the NBA. Having established a broadcasting career alongside his sister for 2 decades, one would have expected that with experience came excellence. Unfortunately, Miller keeps faltering and doesn’t seem to have learned his lesson even now.

The New York Knicks and Boston Celtics squared off once again at TD Garden for Game 2, but the matchup wasn’t the only thing stirring conversation. Reggie Miller, on commentary duty, seemed to be inviting another round of criticism from fans.

During one sequence, Jalen Brunson was visibly seen grabbing Kristaps Porzingis’ leg as he attempted a layup—an act that typically borders on a foul. Yet, rather than address the questionable contact, Miller instead praised the play, saying, “Look as he holds Porzingis’ knee—beautiful move by Brunson.” That wasn’t the only eyebrow-raising moment. Throughout the game, Miller appeared to show an unusual amount of favoritism toward Brunson, despite the guard not having one of his better outings.

Amidst all this, fans knew that enough was enough. They couldn’t go through with the commentary without making their true opinions known.

NBA Community takes a negative stance against Reggie Miller’s commentary: “What the hell is he even talking about”

One social media user wrote, “Reggie Miller is actually the worst commentator I’ve ever seen. What the hell is he even talking about”.

What’s your perspective on:

Is Reggie Miller's commentary bias ruining the NBA viewing experience for fans?

Have an interesting take?

As mentioned before, this is not the first time the 59-year-old has been criticized over his skills as a television broadcaster. A GQ article by Jack Moore, published in April 2015, once accused Miller of being “pompous”. He also accused him of being “unnecessarily bombastic”, and not knowing what “no pun intended” really means. More recently, before the calls over not favoring the Knicks enough, Miller was facing allegations of bias for supporting the Lakers over other teams. When called out over it, he denied supporting one side, and said, “The best compliments I have are on social media when I hear fans saying, ‘You’re such a homer for the Lakers,’ and then the very next comment is, ‘Why are you all on the bandwagon of the Nuggets?’ I’ve done my job”.

One individual wrote, “Petition to get Reggie Miller’s TNT contract terminated”. Well, this individual will not have to wait for long. After all, back in February, it was announced that the Indiana Pacers legend would be leaving TNT to join NBC Sports as its lead game analyst. Miller will continue to remain with his old network for the duration of the ongoing season and continue calling the games till the ongoing playoffs. This shift signals the major overhaul in NBC’s basketball broadcasting lineup, as the network prepares to relaunch its NBA coverage. For Miller, however, this represents a promotion rather than a step-down, which would not sit well with the individual who requested the termination of the contract.

One social media user wrote “Also F**K Reggie Miller. He called KAT a man child on the broadcast tonight. He’s a f**king clown. Give Kevin Harlan a better analyst”.

Once again, this was an unusual 360-degree change from Reggie Miller’s usual stance. Back in May 2024, it was the 5x NBA All-Star who claimed that Karl-Anthony Towns is the key factor for the Wolves in their series against Denver. Later, Stan Van Gundy highlighted agreeing with Miller’s viewpoint, stating “I’m with Reggie, I think New York, not only in experience, it’s [Karl-Anthony] Towns. I think to me, you’re gonna go with Brunson, Towns, and Cade Cunningham”. Perhaps in his effort to appear to be more unbiased, Miller is trashing the Knicks a bit much.

One individual joked that “It’s a little known fact that Vincent Van Gogh cut his ear off after watching a regular season game called by Reggie Miller”.

Back in January, as speculation first started to come in about Miller’s shift, one individual had written: “The worst, horrible insight…cant talk because he has a beyond noticeable lisp”. This highlighted how several people feel about Miller’s voice. They feel that it doesn’t offer the same energy or insight as some of his peers. The criticism was aimed not just at the speaking style, but also the overall quality of the analysis. It showed that his 18-year-long playing career, which earned him a spot in the NBA’s 75th-anniversary team, would not matter if his underwhelming commentary overshadows it.

Another social media user added to the criticism, writing, “Reggie Miller is unbearable man. I’m watching this on mute”. Well, the former player may hold some merit, isn’t it? Otherwise, NBC would not have chosen to place their faith in him.

Overall, the majority of reactions took a negative stance against Reggie Miller. Maybe the same will get to the player, and he might choose to no longer comment on the playoff games. Or, as he has shown before, he will continue on despite the criticism. Only time will tell what happens next.
