Great legacies often crumble in silence, but the Milwaukee Bucks’ fall was deafening. For the third straight year, they crashed out in the first round of the playoff series; this time dismantled in just five games by the surging Indiana Pacers. Meanwhile, Damian Lillard shattered his playoff hopes after suffering a serious lower-body injury in Game 4. The timing couldn’t have been worse. Heartbreak truly does not knock, it storms in.
Now, Damian Lillard tore his left Achilles in Game 4, casting a shadow over his start to the 2025–26 season. As the Bucks fell 119 to 118 in a crushing overtime loss that sealed their fate, Lillard’s resolve only grew. He now turns pain into purpose, vowing to attack rehab and return stronger. However, trade rumors, contract extensions, and more stories are coming into the picture as the Bucks enter an early offseason.
Reports from The Athletic’s Eric Nehm and Sam Amick could be slightly concerning for the fans. On May 1, they informed, “Had Lillard remained healthy, and had the Bucks still fallen in the first round, league sources say there would have been discussions about whether Lillard wanted to remain in Milwaukee.” So, first Giannis Antetokounmpo‘s trade rumors flared in the NBA community, and now Dame? What even is going on in Milwaukee?

To be fair, Damian Lillard is an expensive catch for the franchise after the Greek Freak. Their maximum salaries could take up 70% of the Bucks’ allotted salary cap next season. Meanwhile, “The relationship between Antetokounmpo and Lillard is strong, as is the respect level, but the imperfections of their on-court pairing remained in their second season together,” the reporters wrote.
On several occasions, many people have pointed out that Giannis and Lillard had the star power but not the spark. The pick and roll barely showed up, and Lillard often looked like a guest in someone else’s system. Without the balance Jrue Holiday once brought, their connection never truly found its beat. But now, “the group’s collective limitations growing more evident by the month, a conversation was looming about whether Lillard and the Bucks might be better off parting ways.”
Well, too many factors might be leading to this path, where nothing seems to remain the same in Milwaukee. Right after the Bucks’ Playoffs elimination, experts of the game suggested that Giannis should find his way out of the system; Damian Lillard just might have added his name to list.
Trade rumors and contracts envelop Damian Lillard and Giannis Antetokounmpo
Fifty-four million dollars will sit on the sidelines next season. As Damian Lillard recovers, the Bucks must carry the full weight of his guaranteed salary against their cap with no relief in sight. A disabled player exception is unlikely. And looming ahead is his massive $58.5 million player option for 2026–27.

Meanwhile, Giannis Antetokounmpo reportedly had a meeting with the front office to discuss the team’s future. It remains a mystery whether he’s still a part of that future or not. However, experts of the league have a list of five teams that have the potential of being the Greek Freak’s next landing spot. That list includes the Memphis Grizzlies, the Pistons, the Spurs, the Knicks, and the Houston Rockets.

At the same time, money cannot fix what chemistry could not. With Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard set to take up 70% of the salary cap, Milwaukee has little room left to build around them. Lillard’s injury only deepens the blow, likely pushing ownership to avoid the luxury tax. After $220 million spent over five seasons, the Bucks may settle for being playoff hopefuls in 2025–26, not true title threats.
