Ever been caught in a situation where you made a bold prediction in front of your friends, either about a personal bet, a sporting event, or your favorite reality show, and then had to listen to the taunts when it all went wrong? If you have, then you know that might have dissuaded us from making any such predictions. However, Colin Cowherd is not like us. Over his 2-decade-long broadcasting career, the analyst has made any predictions ranging from “LeBron will never be as good as Jordan was at 40”, to “I think the Rockets upset the Warriors” in the recent playoffs, that have gone on to be proven wrong. While no one can always be right, the confidence with which Cowherd makes the predictions makes it eventful to see him falter. An example of that was seen only recently.
In the aftermath of the New York Knicks’ Game 1 win against the Boston Celtics, Colin Cowherd once again hosted a segment of his ‘The Herd Live’ show. During the same, he touched base on the Boston Celtics’ humiliating loss, as the Knicks secured a close 108-105 win, and that too on the Celtics’ home turf! The loss was especially humiliating when considering that the Celtics were the defending champions and had won 10 more games than the Knicks in the recent regular season. Nevertheless, Colin Cowherd was Confident, with a capital ‘C’, that the sole win was the furthest the Knicks would get in this series.
“Knicks fans, I’ve never seen a Game 1 upset that means less. This is the only game that the Knicks are gonna win,” said the 61-year-old FOX analyst. “Boston’s not gonna miss 45 3s. Enjoy the moment Knicks fans, you are feeling it today. Oh, give me a break”.

As Jerry Seinfeld said in ‘Seinfeld’, “Well, well, well”. After all, Boston might not have missed 45 3s, but they did miss 30! Furthermore, they lost AGAIN! This loss was even more avoidable, as the final score, in the Knicks’ favor, was 91-90! Therefore, any Knicks fan who might have tuned in to watch Cowherd’s segment on that day would have had a good laugh, as their process of ‘enjoying the moment’ continues.

To be fair to Colin Cowherd, it did seem for a moment that Jayson Tatum and co would secure the win this time around. After all, the Boston Celtics opened the game on a 16-4 tear. They held the New York Knicks scoreless for nearly five full minutes to start the game. Then, they took a 20-point lead in the 3rd quarter. Their performance for the majority of the game was a spectacular one. Then, out of the blue, as if it were Undertaker himself rising from his coffin, the Knicks rose from the dead!
They broke open a 21-4 run in the final period, scoring while also keeping the Celtics at bay. Joe Mazzulla’s squad missed 12 straight shots, going more than eight minutes without a field goal. Wow, and here I thought no one could beat my NBA 2K record! After Jayson Tatum ended the dry spell with a memorable dunk, the Celtics were up by only 1 point! Unfortunately, Jalen Brunson drew a foul on an elbow jumper, and all it took was hitting both free throws to bring the Knicks back on top.
Colin Cowherd certainly made efforts to backtrack from his previous remarks. He put out at least 5 tweets in the immediate aftermath of the recent loss. In one of them, he wrote, “The Celtics should have to give 5/6 of their championships back. Humiliating L.” In another tweet, he promoted a liquor shop for any Celtics fans who want to “drown your sorrows.” Unfortunately, his previous remarks are now forever a part of the internet, for people to call him out on. Actually, over the last few hours, quite a few have.
This adds another embarrassing take to the analyst’s list. If you are a long-time NBA fan, you would have thought that after the whole LeBron James-Ben Simmons fiasco, Colin Cowherd would have refrained from making such bold predictions.
Colin Cowherd once claimed the NBA does not need LeBron James thanks to Ben Simmons: “we are good, bro”
With the turn of every generation of NBA players comes one who stands above all. Someone who stands out as a worthy contender for the GOAT title. Since 2003, that player has been LeBron James. With 4 championship titles, the NBA All-Time Scoring record, and the resilience to play even at the age of 40, it is hard to imagine what the sport would be like without him. However, Colin Cowherd did try to imagine it once, and it backfired. Spectacularly!
Back in 2018, the analyst went viral for comparing LeBron James and then Philadelphia 76ers’ star Ben Simmons. Cowherd was impressed by the fact that Simmons had, back then, helped the 76ers blow out the Miami Heat 130-103 on his playoff debut. The Australian had recorded 17 points, 9 rebounds, 14 assists, and 2 steals in that memorable game. Meanwhile, LeBron James and his Cleveland Cavaliers were defeated 98-80 by the Indiana Pacers in Game 1 of their first-round series. Despite LeBron putting up 24 points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, the loss was enough to convince Cowherd. Convince him to make another bold prediction.
“You know I love LeBron, I’ve talked about him incessantly for a decade,” Cowherd said. “I still think he is absolutely remarkable, but for the first time in 10 to 12 years, I look at the NBA, which I’ve watched for four decades, and I say this now with Ben Simmons, ‘Hey LeBron, we are good, bro. You can go. You don’t have to. You can hang around. Still great, but you can go. We’re all good here.’”

Just one game, and Cowherd thought Ben Simmons was the next big thing. If the analyst had waited a few years, he would have seen how Simmons had become only a shell of the player he once was. While LeBron continued dominating, Simmons only averaged 5.0 points, 4.7 rebounds, and 5.6 assists in the 2024-25 regular season.
To his credit, Cowherd did take back his statement in June 2021, by stating, “Right now, Ben Simmons may be closer to Rudy Gobert than LeBron James”. Unfortunately, as highlighted earlier, the analyst’s words are in the public record. Therefore, it will take some more years for him to live down his LeBron James-Ben Simmons take.
