Can Jonathan Kuminga really deliver a memorable performance? Fans at the Target Center may be asking that question as Game 2 between the Golden State Warriors and the Minnesota Timberwolves continues.
The past few weeks have seen Steve Kerr making less and less use of the young star. After all, in his own words, “I have to read what we need. I have to read who’s playing well together, and to be very frank, the Jimmy (Butler), JK (Kuminga) combination has not been great”. Unfortunately, with Stephen Curry dealing with a major injury, the HC had no choice but to give Kuminga more minutes. Now, he might have wished he had done something else.
According to reports, JK lost Naz Reid plenty of times in the game’s first 2 minutes. He kept on being bodied by Donte DiVincenzo on the boards, made a pretty fadeaway vs Ant, missed 2 free throws & even allowed a turnover that led to a layup. The personification of the head-beating meme is happening right in front of our eyes.

The JK experience, it isn’t about talent necessarily, he’s just all over the place.

During his first 2:48 minutes on the court, the player could only score 2 points by making 1-1 (100%) field goals and, as mentioned, 0-2 free throws. As his on-court time increased to 5:07, there was no change in his score. He was on a -15 plus/minus rating, and his poor efforts majorly contributed to the Warriors trailing by 24-46 as 3:32 minutes remained in the 2nd quarter. Even journalists and analysts like Marc J. Spears weren’t impressed, as he wrote on social media that “Kuminga didn’t come ready today”.
Fortunately, things improved as the game progressed. By halftime, Jonathan Kuminga was leading the Warriors’ scoring effort with 10 points, as he made all 5 of his field goal attempts. Despite this, the fact that the Bay Area fans were trailing by a 39-56 score wasn’t appealing too much to fans. Therefore, the criticism against the 22-year-old had occupied a special spot on X.
What’s your perspective on:
Is Jonathan Kuminga the Warriors' future star, or just another player struggling to find his place?

NBA Fans mock Jonathan Kuminga’s scoring in Game 2 of the Warriors-Timberwolves playoff series: “effort is dreadful”
One social media user made his true opinion known by writing, “Jonathan Kuminga’s effort is dreadful for a guy trying to earn minutes and a contract, even if it is for another team.”

This remark comes amidst reports that the tertiary power forward might be on the chopping block during the Warriors’ upcoming offseason. If Kuminga’s low efforts end up eliminating the Warriors in the playoffs’ round 2 itself, then both that offseason and the chopping block would come sooner. Since Jonathan Kuminga only appeared in 3 of the Warriors’ 7 games in the opening round, and got only an average score of 6.0 points in an average 16.7 minutes of playtime, he hasn’t done much to make him appealing to rival teams either. Therefore, the player has to step up if he wants the “annual salary in the $35 million range” he was so desiring, according to reports.
One individual wrote, “Jonathan Kuminga is the worst player in the National Basketball Association”. Well, the same cannot be considered as fact, as every player has their good days and bad days. Furthermore, despite his faults, Kuminga averaged 15.3 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 2.2 assists throughout 47 games in the 2024-25 NBA regular season. Therefore, he is far from being the worst player in the league.
One social media user wrote, “I can’t believe there’s Bulls fans out there who actually want them to get Jonathan Kuminga this offseason”.
Well, it is not as if the Chicago Bulls had much of a foundation to stand on. After all, the franchise holds barely a fraction of the appeal today as it did during the Michael Jordan-Scottie Pippen era. The team ended their regular season with a 39-43 win record, causing them to hold only the 10th seed on the Eastern Conference table. However, the Bulls are changing, and as Brett Siegel highlighted, “After letting DeMar DeRozan go to the Sacramento Kings last offseason and then trading Zach LaVine to Sacramento this season, the Bulls have reshuffled their roster”. Though Jonathan Kuminga may not be anything earth-shattering, he could still be a valuable addition to a franchise that keeps securing poor win records in the regular season.

Well, that might have been true at the early part of the game. However, not so much as the game progressed. After all, as 9:41 minutes remained in the 4th quarter, the Timberwolves were only leading 90-68. It was still a big gap, but Kuminga had risen from the dead like Undertaker to shut down the critics, scoring 20:45 8-10 (80.0%) field goals, 1-2 (50.0%) 3-pointers, and 1-4 (25.0%) free throws. He accompanied that with 5 rebounds. Unfortunately, the same effort would amount to nothing if the Warriors lose. The hate for Jonathan Kuminga would not go away in case of the loss.

Well, one of the teams that currently has their eye on the player are the Philadelphia 76ers. Therefore, you never know. Kuminga might really be going to hell.
Overall, the majority of reactions united in voicing their opinion against the power forward. If the Warriors lose this recent game, they still have a few chances to get back on track. However, Steve Kerr might have to rethink his decision to put Kuminga back in the lineup.
