LeBron James has done it all. There’s literally nothing left for the King to accomplish, and there’s nothing more he can do to cement his GOAT status in the NBA. But for a man who’s conquered it all, there’s still something missing in the cabinet. He’s long said that if he ever was to attend college, it’d be at Ohio State. The Buckeye State is where it all started for the King, back when he was just a promised prince. But the college has gone and fulfilled those wishes, etching him in its folklore.

James will receive a Doctor of Public Service degree, as confirmed earlier today by The Columbus Dispatch. And this isn’t just to honor his on-court impact, which would require a whole ‘nother award in itself. What sets LeBron apart from his peers is his off-court impact and philanthropy, which he does through the LeBron James Family Foundation.

“Born in Akron, Ohio, LeBron Raymone James Sr. is a professional basketball player with a dedication to community engagement and improving the lives of children and families through education, opportunities, and community resources. Just as he’s elevated the game of basketball, LeBron has redefined philanthropy to create a revolutionary model for community building in his hometown of Akron, Ohio,” said the meeting notes for the May 21st felicitation.

The home is where the heart is. The Akron-bred basketball demon still believes in his heart to be a Buckeye. That’s exactly what Ohio State’s intentions are with this honor- to give the King his final stamp to make him an Ohio legend.

To be honest, it’s good to see his off-season plans going at full pace. The embarrassing 4-1 series loss to the Timberwolves was far from expectations. Despite LeBron James being vocal about his decision to stay at the Showtime, the lack of progress has Lakers fans in doubt.

Uncertainty surrounding LeBron James’ future has fans worried

With the King entering a record-23rd year in the NBA, that uncertainty has left a lot to speculate. He could either continue, leave the Lakers, or hang up the sneakers altogether. For now, he’s talked about recovery from his injury being the top priority. But time is running out, and he has to make a decision quickly.

The three-time Olympic champion said this after the Timberwolves loss: “I don’t know, I don’t have an answer to that…I’ll sit down with my family, my wife and my support group and just talk through it and see what happens. And just have a conversation with myself on how long I want to continue to play. I don’t know the answer to that right now, to be honest. So we’ll see.”

What’s your perspective on:

Can LeBron James truly be considered a Lakers legend with only one ring in seven years?

Have an interesting take?

It says a lot when you have nothing left to accomplish, and the desire to win more rings runs deep regardless.

But some NBA legends feel he has more to prove at the Lakers. Granted that the King has only been at the LakeShow for 7 years. Yet, he’s only one solitary ring with them, and will need that second championship in purple and gold to justify a statue. “If he can get to 10 (years) and another ring. Then I’d say he deserves a statue. But right now, no,” said Byron Scott on All The Smoke with Matt Barnes and Stephen Jackson.

The honor from Ohio State is just another accolade in LeBron James’ illustrious career. But despite it not meaning much on the court, it might mean more to his heart. And in a time when his future at the Lakers is still up in smoke, it’s a consolation worth celebrating.
