After their championship win in 2022, the Warriors are have headed downwards only. Last season was a stark reminder that the time is up for the Warriors golden generation. Still, when the Dubs nation was 29-26 in Feb 2024, Joe Lacob, executive chairman of the GSW, handed another two-year extension to head coach Steve Kerr. Because, in his eyes, “Steve has been a fantastic partner, fantastic coach.” But after what happened this season, time may be running out for HC Kerr.
The Warriors were “dead in the water” this year until Coach Kerr made his Jimmy Butler move, a gamble that ultimately helped them survive another disaster season with a playoff spot. But in the Bay Area, just making the playoffs has never been the goal. Klay Thompson is gone. Draymond Green is way past his prime. And even though Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler are still grinding for the Dubs, only uncertainty lies ahead for the veteran coach.
We are down to just a two-year window now. Steph, Jimmy, Draymond, and even Steve have signed their deals in 2024 for one last push for the glory. But when the question shifts to walking away, it hits differently. Steph cannot imagine playing under a coach not named Steve Kerr. And honestly, we can not blame him. The Warriors’ HC says he is fine going year to year, but even he knows the end of his time in Bay Area is inevitable. And head coach Kerr is not the one running away from reality.

Speaking about the future on The TK Show with Tim Kawakami, Coach Kerr throws light on what lies ahead. “I love my job. I love working with these guys, and I just know the NBA; I know how fragile everything is, and I know where our organization is,” Steve Kerr told Tim Kawakami. “We’re at a really interesting spot. I just don’t think it’s even worth speculating. I have no problem just coaching this year and then addressing it next summer.” Speaking of his contract, the Warriors’ head coach is signed for a 2-year, $35 million deal, making him the highest-paid coach in the league’s history.
However, when a franchise decides it wants to make bold moves, then contracts barely matter. We’ve seen such things happen in the NBA before. “I think that’s fair to management. It’s fair to everybody involved. And if they want me back, I’d probably say yes,” Steve Kerr poured his heart out. “I mean, how could I say no to the Warriors and Steph and Andre? But I’ve also learned that there’s no reason to even consider what’s gonna happen in the next year, because none of us has any idea.”

As unpredictable as the future looks now, one thing is clear: Steve Kerr’s heart and soul reside with the Golden State Warriors. Therefore, it’s going to be a no-brainer if the front office asks him to continue as the head coach. Meanwhile, Kerr made some emotional confessions about his relationship with his ultimate Golden Boy, Stephen Curry. Honestly, this duo feels like something straight out of folklore and fairytales.

“I just think 11 years together, you get to know each other better and better every year. You go through stuff. There’s probably no better connector than running the gamut of winning championships to missing the playoffs altogether, and then everything in between,” Steve Kerr confessed. “That’s what we’ve shared. We’ve been through it all, and there’s always a level of respect and comfort in knowing that each of us has the other’s best interest at heart. All we care about is winning, and that’s all we’re trying to do.”
