We’re in the middle of an all-out playoff war between the Boston Celtics and the New York Knicks, and guess what? The Celtics are out there swinging for survival without their main guy, Jayson Tatum. Yep. No JT tonight. No silky stepbacks. No fakeouts that make defenders rethink life. No, casually dropping 30 while chewing gum. Nada.
Instead, Boston is trying to keep the lights on in Game 6 at Madison Square Garden while the Knicks are out there like, “Wait… they left the boss battle weapon at home?” You can almost hear Tom Thibodeau’s heart rate drop. But let’s talk about why Tatum’s not playing. Grab your ice packs, Celtics fans. This one stings.
Let’s not sugarcoat this. Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles tendon in Game 4. As in: the same injury that sent Kobe, KD, and almost every baller over 6’6” to an existential crisis. Tatum went down, and Celtics Nation collectively went through all five stages of grief before halftime.

According to NBA insider Shams Charania, Tatum already had surgery the very next day.
He’s reportedly out for up to nine months—and that’s if the rehab goes as smoothly as a Derrick White buzzer-beater. The injury took him off the court, but not out of the fight entirely. Tatum is staying connected with the team, even visiting them in NYC and watching from the sidelines tonight like a dad at Little League. He’s also reportedly reached out to Kevin Durant for rehab advice, since KD pulled off one of the greatest comebacks from this exact same injury.
So yeah, no Tatum tonight, and no Tatum for the rest of these playoffs. Celtics fans, pour one out for the season that could’ve been.
What’s your perspective on:
Can the Celtics pull off a miracle without Tatum, or is this the Knicks' series to lose?
Have an interesting take?
So, who is carrying the Celtics in Tatum’s absence?
Let’s check the official injury scroll, shall we? Tatum’s out, obviously. But Kristaps Porzingis? He’s suiting up tonight. While not exactly flying around like a unicorn on roller skates, he’s back on the floor doing what he can. In 11 minutes so far, he’s got 4 points and 5 rebounds, and hey, even a three-pointer to his name.
The rest of the roster? Still trying to find rhythm. Jaylen Brown is doing some heavy lifting again—he’s already got 18 points, 3 boards, and 5 dimes, but also a whopping 6 turnovers.
Derrick White, who turned into a flamethrower in Game 5, is struggling a bit tonight. He’s shooting just 3-of-9 and hasn’t quite found the same groove from downtown. Jrue Holiday? The shooting stats have been subpar. He’s 1-of-8 from the field right now—basically throwing up prayers and getting voicemail in return.

The Celtics are shooting 34% from the floor and 26.1% from three, which is, scientifically speaking, not good. Like, “we might get eliminated tonight” bad. Meanwhile, the Knicks are playing like their moms promised them ice cream if they clinch the series.
Across the court, the Knicks are locked in. Karl-Anthony Towns is putting up 16 points like he’s back in Kentucky. Mikal Bridges is balling out with 12 on 50% shooting.
As of mid-third quarter, the Celtics are trailing, and if they don’t pull off a comeback of Marvel movie proportions, they might be booking Cancun flights before the fourth quarter ends. But it ain’t over till it’s over.

The Celtics are in full “backs against the wall” mode. If they win tonight, it’s back to Boston for a decisive Game 7 on Monday. Lose, and it’s lights out. The Eastern Conference Finals would belong to the Knicks for the first time since Destiny’s Child was still releasing albums.
But let’s not forget: Boston has already survived one game without Tatum. They blasted the Knicks by 25 in Game 5. If they can find that same energy, that same focus, and maybe a few working jump shots, they can still pull this one out.
As Jaylen Brown put it: “I believe in this group. So don’t count us out just yet.” It’s not just inspirational—it’s a plea to the basketball gods. Celtics fans are lighting candles, saying prayers, and checking the score like it’s a lie.

We’re still in the thick of it, folks. Game 6 is rolling, the Celtics are down but far from dead, and Madison Square Garden is jumping like it’s 1999.
So, no Jayson Tatum tonight. No problem? Maybe. Maybe not. But this team has grit. They’ve got fight. And most importantly, they’ve got nothing to lose. Let’s see if the Celtics can script one more chapter in this wild playoff saga… or if the Knicks are about to slam the book shut.
