The question of the longevity of LeBron James’ career is even more pertinent after this year’s first-round playoff exit. It didn’t help that James felt unsure about his future with the Los Angeles Lakers, opting not to answer the press when asked about it. While Bron’s performance in the first round eliminated all doubts about his capability to continue, other factors are still unknowable.

According to his agent and childhood best friend, Rich Paul, James has ‘five’ more years, ‘body wise’, and a lot more mentality to give to basketball. However, in the newest ‘All the Smoke’ episode, he revealed another crucial point that could put an end to LBJ’s career, much earlier than five years.

“Mindwise, as it pertains to frustration, or like I (speaking for LeBron) done have enough missing time with my family, with my wife, and just being, you know, ’cause they’ve been, they’ve been, you know, unbelievable, they, oh yeah, support system. At some point, come on, man, it’s got to be about them. And I think from that perspective, maybe two to three, you know,” Paul noted.

This makes it clear that while James can play a lot longer than we anticipate, he might not have the mental space to do so for much longer. 21 years in the league means that he has had to sacrifice a lot of his family time to chase greatness, and now, maybe it’s time to hand up the cape for King James.

LeBron James’ future trajectory in the league

LeBron indicated what’s coming ahead as he opened up during the post-game interview after the 4-1 loss against the Denver Nuggets. When asked about his plans in the offseason, the former MVP said,  “I just want to get home to the family honestly, start looking at the schedule.”

He further added,  “Obviously, I got, you know, my son, one of my boys is just trying to decide if he’s gonna enter the draft or go back to school. I got another kid that’s playing Au ball right now, my daughter is playing volleyball, and my wife is doing so many great things. So it’s about family right now.”
