‘Why Not?’ No, we’re not posing a question. We’re just re-iterating Russell Westbrook‘s foundation name and his likely mantra towards life. As the sun set in the South Gate, the hooper stood, reflecting on his journey from a young boy in LA to a superstar. As he unveiled the newly expanded Westbrook Academy, a sense of fulfillment washed over him. “For their kids, for their families,” he said to Good Day LA’s Brooke Thomas regarding his immense support of ‘giving back’ to the community.
Initially launched during the pandemic, Russell Westbrook’s facility can now support more than 400 middle and high school students. “I just feel like, you know, when you’re in a space and you feel good and it feels comfortable and safe, then you have the best opportunity to succeed and get your work done,” Nina Westbrook said.
The Westbrook Academy shared on their Instagram handle a glimpse of the hooper enjoying the inauguration and ribbon-cutting ceremony. The excitement surrounding the academy emphasizes its focus on education and mental health resources. This expansion, a collaboration with the LA Promise Fund, aims to provide a safe, nurturing environment for students, echoing Russell Westbrook’s own experiences growing up in South Los Angeles. When it comes to education, he goes above and beyond, not just focusing on academics.

Alongside the academy unveiling, Russell Westbrook and Chris Paul organized a charity poker tournament in Las Vegas, partnering with the World Poker Tour Foundation. It’s safe to say that the event raised quite a few thousands. Attendees had to pay a $7500 entry fee, which included exclusive perks, all while engaging in a night of fun and philanthropy. “I’ve learned and got a little bit better year after year, and I’m not tight. I can tell you that,” Beastbrook said, lightheartedly flaunting his poker skills on the night.
The tournament not only showcased Russell Westbrook’s competitive spirit but also reinforced his desire to uplift his community. His vision extends far beyond basketball. He expressed a strong desire to leave a positive legacy, focusing on the empowerment of youth and the importance of local initiatives.
“To me, legacy is what you leave behind,” the hooper proudly stated, underscoring his commitment to making a lasting impact.

Russell Westbrook: A beacon of hope for his hometown
This isn’t the first time we’ve seen Russell Westbrook involved in charitable initiatives to support his hometown. The Nuggets star had joined Evermont earlier in 2024, a project aimed at developing 180 affordable housing units in South Los Angeles. The endeavor, anchored by Target, is set to rise on a site historically relevant because of the 1992 Los Angeles riots, following the acquittal of officers in the Rodney King case.
Along with affordable housing, the Westbrook-supported project will incorporate a SEED school and businesses that cater to the community, opening up employment options for residents. The goal is to change the narrative of South Central Los Angeles by engaging the community and fostering development.

Since the inception of the Russell Westbrook Why Not Foundation? in 2012, the hooper has been dedicated to investing back into LA, collaborating with orgs such as LeadersUp to offer healthcare, education, and vocational training opportunities.
“Being from the inner city, I understand the resources and opportunities that are needed for young people,” Westbrook stated. Jeffery Wallace, President and CEO of LeadersUp praised his leadership and philanthropy, highlighting the role of education and career opportunities in creating a fair economy.
