When Kevin Durant had his career-defining season in the 2013-14 season, there were two MVPs at the conclusion of the Finals—KD, who averaged 35.9 points per game while scoring at least 30 in 12 straight games, and his mother, Wanda, who is Kevin’s “real MVP.” The Slim Reaper has always been vocal about his mother Wanda’s unwavering support and sacrifices on his journey to becoming a basketball great. However, a former Golden State Warriors player brushed off Durant’s acknowledgment of his mother’s influence as a contrived “narrative” being pushed by the NBA.

Kwame Brown has emerged as a social media sensation ever since his premature retirement from the NBA in 2014, gaining fame for his unfiltered outbursts directed at league players. In one such episode of the Kwame Brown Bust Life, he went off on the NBA for trying to push the narrative of struggling single black moms. In doing so, he dragged Kevin Durant’s mother, Wanda, into the fray. Brown said,

“They pump these guys’ mama. If they black, they pump their mama up. You seen Kevin Durant mama get pumped up. Not to say she don’t deserve some praise, but you see that they pumped it’s a narrative they pumped these women up and my mom just wasn’t willing to do.”

The basis of Brown’s allegation stems from his own experience when he entered the league as a teenager. According to him, the executives wanted to change his story into one that would be most beneficial for the league.

The reasoning behind Kwame Brown’s statements

“It’s like they try to force the grown sh– on young people that don’t want that sh–,” said the 41-year-old. He further added, “They like to push agenda. My first agenda they wanted me to push is this narrative that a single black mom by herself with eight kids got a kid to the number one draft pick and that just wasn’t true, so she didn’t want to push that narrative.”

According to him, his mother got help from his mentor, the government, and so many other people, so Brown could do good in his life. “But that’s the narrative; they want to highlight that to all the other women, and they’ll latch on and say, ‘See, look what a black woman could do.’ But in the majority of those situations, your kid is probably going to go to jail or get killed if you look at the numbers,” stated Brown.
