Ever since COVID-19 arrived at the scene, Kyrie Irving became involved in a lot of controversies. He was refusing to take the vaccine and created a lot of stir in Brooklyn. Kyrie Irving’s contract can see further growth

Thanks to his great reputation as a scorer and his stepmother Shetellia Riley Irving, who is also his agent, the former Cleveland Cavaliers Guard signed a hefty $126 million contract for three years. The amount is understandable since elite Guards are easily commanding over $40 million a year and even after a sub-par year by his standards, Fred Van Vleet had a $40+ million contract per year, a deal similar to Irving.

However, off-court controversies may have decreased the dribbling wizard’s value a tad bit. But there may be another catch to this contract. As per Hoopshype, Irving’s contract has a 15% trade kicker.

A trade kicker means that if the Guard is traded to another team, he will get a 15% bonus on his contract. It means that the Mavs will have to bear the brunt of the bonus. It implies that a trade would get Irving’s contract to $50 million. Usually, teams craft such a contract to showcase that they are willing to keep a player till the end of the contract.

If this is the case, it is a win-win situation for the Irving duo that grabbed the contract. The contract is already hefty and if the team decides to look elsewhere, it will still keep his value intact. However, will a team will be willing to pick Kyrie if he accrues another rough season? After having underwhelming stints with the Celtics and the Nets, there is some skepticism about him. Therefore, his performances in the upcoming season are going to be under scrutiny.

The recent examples of trade kickers

More than 40 players have the trade-kicker clause. One of the prominent examples of a player who has such a percentage is Stephen Curry. Giannis Antetokounmpo also falls in this bracket. A player can also waive the trade kicker in hopes of signing a newer and heftier contract. Controversial player Ben Simmons also had a trade-kicker clause while the newly traded Marcus Smart had it too.
