The 2023-24 NBA regular is slowly reaching its conclusion. High seeding teams are looking to maintain their position until the playoffs approach. Others are making a last-ditch attempt to achieve a higher rank in order to qualify for the same. The Golden State Warriors, ranked as the 10 seed, are currently facing a new threat in the form of the Houston Rockets. The latter team recently recorded their 10 consecutive win and are just half a game away from overtaking the Warriors and secure the same seed for themselves. Having gotten themselves stuck in this hazardous position; many NBA enthusiasts now question the next step for Stephen Curry’s team.

A few hours ago, former NFL player and legend Shannon Sharpe released another episode of his ‘Nightcap’ show. During the same, he and his co-host, former Washington Wizards player Gilbert Arenas, discussed Draymond Green’s recent ejection and the overall state of the Golden State Warriors. Sharpe stated that if the Warriors continue to lose the rest of their games, then there is a very good chance that head coach Steve Kerr could “shut Steph Curry down for the rest of the year”. He gave his opinion that the hypothetical situation could very well become a reality if the Rockets overtake the franchise.

“I can see a scenario that if the Warriors catch the Rockets for that 10 spot, they’re not going to fight for they’re like ‘Ok hey Steph, you’re done’” said Sharpe. “‘Let’s take a look at Kuminga, let’s take a look at Moody, and some of these other guys’”.

Arenas agreed with his co-host’s opinion, stating that the Warriors need to “build confidence for next year”.  Furthermore, the 42-year-old felt that the Warriors would just be wasting Curry if the team fell any further down the points chart. Younger players like Jonathon Kuminga and Moses Moody could use the practice. The same, however, wouldn’t be much helpful for veteran players like Curry.

Sharpe’s comments highlight just how crucial the next few games for the Warriors will be. If the Rockets acquire the 10 seed, then almost all hope will be lost for Stephen Curry and co to make it to the playoffs and remove their motivation to win. Despite what lies ahead for them, the four-time NBA champion continues to believe that his team has the potential to beat everyone else.

In the aftermath of the Warriors’ win against the Miami Heat, Stephen Curry was asked about his team’s success when playing away from their home court. The player highlighted the same as the reason why he still believes the Warriors are “a good team that can beat anybody”.

“You are what your record is, that’s what the line is, but we do feel like we’ve kind of underachieved on that front,” said Curry. There’s still [a] belief that if you can get hot, that you can establish the identity that you need to have to be a team that can win four games against anybody in the Western Conference in a playoff series. Until we don’t have that opportunity anymore, we’re going to still believe it.”
