Having played 35 games with the Dallas Mavericks this season, Seth Curry is now in the Charlotte Hornets. This marks the first instance since 1998 that a member of the Curry family has been part of the Hornets, with Seth’s father, Dell Curry, being the last Curry to represent the team. Dell had a decade-long tenure with the Hornets, and now, his son has upheld the family legacy.

In a sentimental twist thanks to trade deadline, Seth Curry was granted the honor of wearing Dell Curry’s jersey number 30. During the pre-game warmups of Seth’s inaugural game as a Hornet, it was a poignant moment for Dell as he expressed his pride in seeing his son donning the same number that holds significance in their family’s basketball history.

“It’s a dream come true as a dad who played (in Charlotte) for 10 years. To have your son play and wear the same number,” said Dell. “I haven’t slept much last night. I haven’t stopped smiling since the trade was made. Now it comes to fruition right here.”

Throughout Dell’s tenure, Charlotte achieved four playoff appearances, earning a devoted fanbase in a region known for its passion for basketball. Even his other son the Warriors legend Stephen Curry also spent many years in Charlotte alongside Seth perfecting their basketball skills. Now, as the younger Curry brother sports his father’s Jersey, will he be able to duplicate his legendary status.

Seth Curry’s prospects in the Hornets

As per the NBA trade deadline, Seth Curry is anticipated to remain with the Hornets until the upcoming season, barring any trades next year. This marks a significant moment for the Curry family, providing Seth with the chance to mirror the success his father, Dell, achieved during his playing years. However, the question arises: can Seth live up to this challenge?

Over his impressive 10-year tenure with the Hornets, Dell Curry served as the team’s primary shooter, excelling both from behind the arc and inside. His outstanding shooting skills defined his time in Charlotte as the pinnacle of his career.

Dell boasted averages of 14.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, 2.0 assists, and 1.1 steals, with a shooting accuracy of 46.2% during his Hornets era. Additionally, he earned the Sixth Man of the Year award in the 1993-94 season.

Despite his father not securing a title in Charlotte or in his overall career, Seth Curry faces high expectations. His current season statistics reflect one of his less impressive years in the NBA, averaging 4.4 points with a disappointing shooting accuracy of 37.2%. This comes as a surprise considering Seth’s 46.3% field goal accuracy from the previous season.

In order to honor his dad’s jersey number, Seth Curry will need to rediscover his rhythm. Regardless of performance, Dell Curry, like any proud father, will find joy in witnessing his son play for the team he once represented, wearing his father’s cherished number.
