The Golden State Warriors waited until the eve of training camp, but they finally got business done. Their rumored target, Al Horford, is signing a multi-year deal, while Gary Payton II and De’Anthony Melton also return. But was this the plan all along, or did they need a push? According to one source, Stephen Curry and Draymond Green had to intervene for the front office to start rolling.

Swipa, an analyst who covers the Denver Nuggets, got the scoop. He claimed, “Apparently Draymond and Steph are meeting with the ownership and with the front office here soon, and because they’re just I think bewildered as the rest of the public is on why exactly number one this situation is taking so long but also number two are you are we all on the same page here?” he said on Locked on NBA.
Concerns were rising not just for the players, but also for Dub Nation. Jonathan Kuminga’s complicated negotiations initially allowed the front office to have some patience. But with only nine players days away from training camp, the environment wasn’t ideal. Likewise, the Warriors recognized the urgency of the situation and made their moves.

Finally, Stephen Curry and Green have an idea of what exactly they are working with. Horford, in particular, is a major addition. A champion with the Celtics, the veteran has evolved his game to expand beyond the arc. It’s been years since the Bay had such versatility on its roster, which is equipped with great shooters.

Don’t underestimate Payton and Melton either. The latter may have appeared in just six games before a season-ending injury. But Melton amplified the Warriors’ system, especially in minutes besides Stephen Curry. To have three veterans that fit Steve Kerr’s profile is a big addition for the Warriors.

However, does this mean they have given up on Jonathan Kuminga?

Jonathan Kuminga and the Warriors remain at odds
The Warriors’ stalemate with Kuminga has almost reached its apex. The budding forward has days away from the deadline to sign a qualifying offer. Additionally, since negotiations are still ongoing, JK won’t even appear on media day as a Warriors player. So did the Warriors make a statement that they are ready to move on from Kuminga months after trying to reach a common point?
The front office may be in such a state. They were waiting to sign their free agent targets in hopes that the JK dilemma would be past them. Or it’s also possible that they were just willing to wait until training camp to understand their finances. Nonetheless, no signs point to their negotiations gaining a headway.
It has troubled Stephen Curry and the core. But despite the discomfort, they all want Jonathan Kuminga to continue with the team. ESPN’s Anthony Slater previously wrote, “His star teammates Jimmy Butler and Draymond Green have reached out, checking on Kuminga, his plans and his mindset,”. Draymond Green sees the explosive forward as his rookie, while many compare Butler’s play style to the 22-year-old.

The forward who arrived with the Warriors last season has praised Kuminga in the past. Hence, it was a surprise when he was the only absentee at Butler’s mini-camp, which he recently hosted. So despite the stars trying to smooth things over, it doesn’t seem like the situation has lightened up. The best bet is that Kuminga signs the qualifying offer, which comes with an inherent no-trade clause.
That will allow the forward to become an unrestricted free agent next summer, breaking off the Warriors’ shackles from his wrist. There is a $54 million extension that comes with a player option, something Kuminga insisted on. Yet, with just days remaining in the saga, it looks like JK is prioritizing his future elsewhere.
