Home/NBA

The San Antonio Spurs have become one of the most successful franchises in the NBA. Under the leadership of legendary head coach Gregg Popovich, Spurs have won 5 NBA titles. But the last few seasons have been rough on the Spurs’ fans, as their beloved team has fallen down the pecking order. The last time Spurs secured a playoff spot was in 2019, when they lost to the Denver Nuggets in the first round of playoffs.

Since then, the Spurs have undergone rebuilding. In 2023, they hit the jackpot, as they drafted highly touted French phenom Victor Wembanyama as the number one pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. After a preseason game against the Warriors, their head coach made snarky remarks regarding the Spurs and Gregg Popovich.

The addition of rookie Victor Wembanyama has rejuvenated the Spurs. After years of mediocrity, the Spurs now have an opportunity to once again contend for the highest accolades in the NBA. Wembanyama is a generational talent, as the NBA has never seen a player of his size with the skill set that Victor possesses. In the preseason game against the Warriors, Wembanyama’s skill set was on full display, as he scored 19 points in just twenty-one minutes.

During the post-match press conference, Steve Kerr stated that Popovich and the Spurs were “rejuvenated” by the arrival of Wembanyama. Coach Pop jokingly responded by saying, “What was I being rejuvenated from? Was I in a mental institution? Was I depressed and curled up in my bedroom or something?… Steve is an a**hole”.

The Spurs handed the Warriors their first loss of the NBA preseason. The Spurs would like to continue in the same vein of form when they face the Mavs on 25th October.

Beginning of Something Special

The 2023-24 season could mark the beginning of Spurs’ ascent back to the very top of the NBA. Spurs winning the sweepstakes for Wembanyama, have just fast-tracked that process. The Spurs have garnered a reputation for excellent player development, as they developed NBA legends like Tim Duncan, David Robinson, and Manu Ginobili.

Apart from Victor, the Spurs already have a very talented core of young players like Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell, and Jeremy Sochan. The Spurs roster, with all its youthful exuberance, would look to end their four-year hiatus from the NBA playoffs. The potential of this Spurs roster is truly frightening, but will they reach their potential? I guess only time will have an answer to that question.
