The Challenge Ahead for Suns

Bradley Beal returns for the Suns who was dealing with finger injury. The Suns regain key contributor in their offense. But the absence of Jusuf Nurkić poses a dilemma, particularly in terms of size and defensive capabilities. Jusuf Nurkić has been ruled out because of ankle injury for their next match. Nurkic’s presence in the arc challenges opponents for scoring and he protects the rim well. Nurkic averages 11.3 points per game this season and he also averages 11.0 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game.

Kevin Durant stands tall at 6 foot 10 inch but he is not traditional center and is primarily utilized as a power forward. Best option to replace Nurkic could be DeAndre Ayton. Ayton 6 foot 11 inches center will likely see an increase in minutes and defensive responsibilities. Teams in NBA prioritize tall and athletic players on court. Especially during playoff when physicality intensifies having height is considered a natural advantage.

The success of Phoenix suns will depend on their offense. Kevin Durant remains a matchup nightmare for most teams, his scoring prowess unguardable. He averages 27.6 points per game this season and he also averages 6.8 rebounds and 5.8 assists per game respectively. Devin Booker also creates space in the paint and creates scoring chances. He averages 27.2 points per game and 6.9 assists per game this season.

The Suns must imply more strategic changes and play more defenders to challenge the opposition team. The Championship aspirations of Suns have taken a hit due to Nurkic’s injury. However, writing them off would be inappropriate as they have a very good offense roster and posses a deep roster like Isaiah Thomas & Grayson Allen.

It will be interesting to see how Suns adapt to the game. Coach Frank Vogel will need to devise defensive schemes that maximize their remaining size and athleticism. The chances of Suns qualification will depend on their ability to overcome this “length dilemma” and find alternative ways to be effective on the defensive end.
