The Golden State Warriors have shaken up their roster this offseason with a major acquisition of the 12x All-Star Chris Paul. There were high hopes for their talented 24-year-old star, Jordan Poole, who could lead the team into the future in Stephen Curry‘s absence. However, the focus has shifted to maximizing the remaining prime years of 35-year-old Curry’s career. The Warriors are making bold moves to ensure they make the most of Curry’s peak performance.

While other teams are focusing on rebuilding and betting on young faces, the Warriors have other plans for their team. They are not looking far into the future; their sole focus is what is ahead of them.

Warriors owner Joe Lacob, in conversation with Bay Area News Group, found himself once again addressing the notion of two timelines for his team, firmly asserting that there is only one timeline that centers on competing for championships. He emphasized that the goal each year is to put the best product on the floor and assemble the best team possible to contend for the ultimate prize in the NBA.

Amid a pivotal offseason of change, the Warriors are making significant moves to bolster their roster. General Manager Mike Dunleavy Jr. executed a blockbuster trade that brought in 38-year-old future Hall of Famer Chris Paul, while sending 24-year-old Jordan Poole, along with prospects Patrick Baldwin Jr. and Ryan Rollins, to the Washington Wizards.

Lacob also stated that it was a “multi-faceted decision,” and that there were other elements that went into the trade decision, making it complicated. Chris Paul’s acquisition is expected to increase the team’s prospects of winning in the near future. The deal also gives the Warriors financial flexibility, which is essential since the new collective bargaining agreement imposes harsher penalties on clubs with heavy payroll expenses. The pre-season incident in which Draymond Green assaulted Jordan Poole was one important aspect that might have affected the choice.

The team understood that something needed to change. “While it’s a short-term move, Chris Paul is a fabulous Hall of Famer who will I think certainly help our second unit, help our first unit if he plays there, wherever he plays, he’s a tremendous guy,” Lacob added.

Poole was happy and greatly contributed to the Golden State Warriors’ 2022 championship win. In October 2022, the Golden State Warriors guard agreed to a four-year contract deal worth $128 million. However, his sudden transfer did not make sense to the fans or the NBA world, let alone to Poole himself. Following the trade, fans felt the pain in the new Washington Wizards guard’s face and came together in support of the 24-year-old star.

Now that their star GM Bob Myers has left the team, the Warriors have changed their approach. Gone are the days when Myers saw a dynasty in the original trio of Klay Thompson, Draymond Green, and Curry. He placed the bet on these stars when they were young, and apparently, Poole expected this trust from the front office.
