Chris Paul and LeBron James share a bond that transcends competition and rivalry. A few years ago, they went on a trip with Carmelo Anthony and Dwayne Wade, which became a great storyline. If you haven’t seen their banana boat picture, please look up. It was an instant meme. Thus, to see LeBron and Chris Paul hugging each other after the preseason opener, had many Laker fans heaving a huge “what if” sigh.

Chris Paul joining the Warriors must not have been a simple decision for him. He had fought the Dubs since his Clipper days. So that makes one wonder if he had a choice in this matter at all.

Chris Paul has wanted to be a Laker since over a decade ago. He almost joined Kobe in 2011 when the Lakers had won championships in 2009 and 2010. The previous NBA Commissioner David Stern prevented that from happening. He vetoed that move because of the pressure applied from other team owners who demanded parity of talent in the league. Thus, Chris Paul had to become a Clipper instead. Since then, the NBA has seen many super teams.

Chris Paul commands a huge contract this season. Despite that, the Golden State Warriors took him on board. They were desperate to ship out Jordan Poole. If CP3 were on a smaller contract, in spite of his injury history, he would have garnered attention from many suitors. And the Lakers would have been one of them. Meanwhile, fans reacted to the tweet after the Warrior victory over the Lakers in the preseason game. It shows the love for Chris Paul in Laker Nation.

What would a championship mean to Chris Paul?

Charles Barkley is one of the greatest players ever to play in the NBA. However, he could not win a championship. He, along with legends like John Stockton, Karl Malone, and Patrick Ewing, are ringless because of Michael Jordan’s Bulls. To this date, they lament the fact that their careers ended without that one validation, which is every player’s dream. Will CP3 be on that list too? Or the warriors would be the team that change his destiny?

If it were a few years ago, the Dubs dynasty would have definitely gotten a ring for CP3. But they do not have the same mojo now. A lot of things should come together for this aging group to have a realistic chance at the title.
