“Trauma and Pain..”: Dejounte Murray Breaks Silence On Mental Struggles After Hawks Miss Playoff

The Atlanta Hawks hang their jerseys for the season after a 131-116 loss in the play-ins. The Chicago Bulls, behind Coby White’s 42 points, dominated the game from the tip-off. Now, the Hawks head back home with a heavy heart, marking an early off-season for the franchise. With that, Dejounte Murray, their emerging youngster, has his work cut out for the coming months.

As teams geared up to lock the 8th seed in respective conferences, Dejounte Murray took to X in light of his biggest priority before the 2024-25 NBA season. The 27-year-old shed light on the years of ignored introspection, quipping, “MENTAL HEALTH Is Finally My #1 Priority Right Now. 🙏🏽 I Been Holding In And Running From My Built Up Trauma And Pain For Years!!!! #WeAreAllEqual 🖤”

The NBA, known to celebrate mental and physical toughness, has seen an increased demand for addressing mental battles. While players like Draymond Green, DeMar DeRozan, and Damian Lillard are actively keeping the wheels in motion, Ricky Rubio’s recent moves have probed several players to spark the inner journey themselves.

The guard initially left his Cleveland Cavaliers roster in light of tending to his mental health at the beginning of the season. As fans expected to see the Spanish guard on the court deeper in the season, Rubio, on January 5, surprisingly announced his retirement. With the stature of global competitions still in sight, Rubio and the Cavs agreed to a contract buyout, ending his 12-year NBA career.

As the Hawks are set to shake things up in the coming months, fans do not expect Murray to make a detour from the court. He remains amongst the most promising players in the NBA and shows continuous signs of growth. Regardless, the latest season could have added to a lot of Murray’s conflict.

Dejounte Murray’s trade talks could factor in

The latest season saw the best campaign from Dejounte Murray. Playing most games in the last 6 years (78), Murray was elevated to be the Hawks’ top player in light of Trae Young’s injuries. With that, he posted his best offensive season, churning 22.5 points (45.9% shooting from the field, 36.3 from the three) alongside 5.3 rebounds and 6.4 assists.

Moreover, he displayed some of his highest-scoring games this season, posting 44 against the Boston Celtics, and 41 points against the Minnesota Timberwolves and the Grizzlies. Despite that, Murray had to battle through consistent rumors in the trade market. Additionally, it surged when teams across the league were seeking fitting role players around the trade deadline, pitting his two-way athleticism to add to his pressures at times.
