JJ Redick had been a popular choice to succeed Darvin Ham as the Los Angeles Lakers head coach for the past few weeks. Since beginning an analytical podcast with LeBron James, a core part of the Lakers, experts assumed his place at the helm to be certain. However, in a recent episode of ‘Mind the Game‘, a lacking quality of his was exposed. Redick has never coached an NBA team. Moreover, as an NBA player, he has only been to one NBA Finals, never having the luxury of hoisting one. Even then, the franchise was willing to overlook his unattractive coaching resume. That was until a bull entered the conversation.

Completely flipping from Redick, the Lakers are said to be heavily in talks with UConn Huskies head coach Dan Hurley. The strategic genius steered the college champions to an unprecedented offensive run, breaking records. Additionally, Hurley became the first coach in 17 years to defend his NCAA title. As highlighted before, Redick doesn’t possess the same pedigree.

That might be among the reasons LeBron James has decided to fall away from the framework of having JJ Redick as the head coach. While he hasn’t publicly spoken in favor of Hurley, the only way a conversation with the esteemed college coach would ignite would be through the approval of the franchise’s ace. The 39-year-old however, has multiple reasons to support the hire of Hurley if it goes through.

Here’s why.

Why LeBron James could side with Dan Hurley

In six seasons as the head coach of the Huskies, Hurley garnered a record of 141-58, a 7-% winning record. The seasoned professional is recognized for his exceptional offensive schemes. Hurley turned the Huskies into aggressive-minded animals at least this season. They rampaged through every opponent this season, including the Finalists in Purdue. No one was shown any remorse as the Huskies compiled a 37-3 record. Hurley was an artist behind their dominant force.

Additionally, the Huskies head coach is well-respected for his impressive player development. Three players have declared and are said to be drafted to the NBA from this season’s championship team alone. It includes star center Donovan Clingan and guard Stephon Castle (projected lottery picks). NCAA Finals hero Tristen Newton is also a part of the upcoming NBA Draft.

Part of the same class as Bronny James, the Akron Hammer might see Hurkey as the ideal mentor for his elder son. Bronny had an offsetting college season with USC alluding to his chronic heart condition. Despite this, there are murmurs that the Lakers are interested in drafting the explosive 6’1″ guard with their 55th pick in the draft. If they do so, having a proven developer like Hurley teach him the ways of success could be the perfect start to his young NBA career.

Lastly, James’ love bond with Hurley’s offensive plans began way before he was linked to the Lakers. He expressed his love for his tactics and game plans publicly in an outpour on X. When responding to an interview clip of Redick(ironic), James wrote, “He’s so DAMN GOOD!!! Along with his staff. Super creative with their [offense]. Love it”.

While no decision has been made final, Adrian Wojnarowski is rarely wrong. He claims the Lakers are preparing a long-term contract, much like Redick was rumored to have stretching 4-6 years. Not only that but they could offer the college legend a historic contract too even though it is technically his first NBA coaching gig.
