The ongoing NBA season has been nothing short of a spectacle, especially with the emergence of exciting new talents on the basketball court. Right from the draft night, it brought a unique set of players to the hardwood. Now, 4 months into the season, the run for the highly coveted Rookie of the Year (ROTY) title is intensifying, with several standout first-year players making strong cases. While Victor Wembanyama and Chet Holmgren have been leading the charge for most of the season, Brandon Miller of the Charlotte Hornets is now stepping up to vie for the prestigious title.
In recent games, Miller has been on an impressive scoring streak, shooting with an accuracy rate exceeding 50% and demonstrating energy on both ends of the floor. With the same momentum, he carried the same enthusiasm into the Hornets’ matchup against the Detroit Pistons. Despite a loss to the team with the lowest record in the league, Miller achieved a significant milestone in his rookie journey.
His 23-point performance not only marked the team’s highest contribution but also propelled him into the ranks of Victor Wembanyama as the only other rookie to achieve four consecutive 20-point games this season.

Amidst the game, the Hornets spread the word about Miller’s impressive achievement. However, despite their determined efforts, they could not close out the game. With newfound confidence and a scoring void to fill following Terry Rozier’s exit, there is high anticipation that Miller can sustain his scoring surge.

Victor Wembanyama leads the Rookie race
Even before the season kicked off, Victor Wembanyama was seen as an obvious choice for the Rookie of the Year award. However, in the initial weeks of the season, Chet Holmgren changed the script, emerging as the frontrunner. He displayed a more mature approach to the game, with efficient scoring.

Nevertheless, at the midpoint of the season, Wembanyama reclaimed the top spot through his well-managed performances. Gradually and consistently, the rookie is evolving into what fans expect from him—a complete two-way center with skills reminiscent of a guard. While this transformation hasn’t yet translated into a series of winning performances, there’s high anticipation that his surge will continue.

On the flip side, Brandon Miller has recently ascended the rookie ladder, securing the third spot. This climb comes after the initial three games from his streak of 20-point games. In the process, he surpassed Miami Heat‘s Jaime Jaquez Jr. As of now, Chet Holmgren stands at the number 2 spot while Dereck Lively is listed at #5.
