Stephen Curry’s mother opens up about her family situation

During a recent appearance on Got It From My Momma podcast, Sonya divulged the struggles of dealing with a difficult divorce and the challenges of protecting their children throughout the process. As a mother of two boys and a girl, Sonya had witnessed all kinds of sibling rivalry that took place at home. Despite Stephen Curry and Seth Curry‘s close relationship, they often indulged in heated fights with each other as children. The Curry family is a competitive and athletic household, so fights like these were a common occurrence.

She disclosed how she as a mother dealt with the situation. According to her, the best bet is to not pick sides, and instead cater to each child’s individual needs. Since each of her three children is unique, it is only fair to treat them differently in order to fulfil their unique needs. Although, that does not mean that she would be partial to them.

She said, “It was showing them we don’t show favoritism. And part of not showing favoritism means we treat you the same, but we treat you differently. So treating you differently is treating you the same because we try to meet you where you are.”

Sonya and Dell’s story

Sonya and Dell Curry’s love story was like something out of a fairytale. They met each other when, one evening, Sonya’s volleyball coach asked Dell to watch one of her games. After the game ended, Dell asked Sonya out on a date, and the pair eventually married in 1988. However, Dell and Sonya decided to end their marriage in 2021 after 33 long years together. It came as a shock since the couple seemed to be enthralled by each other in public.

Despite a messy divorce, the couple decided to stay committed to their children. Even though things have not always been on the sunny side for the Curry family, Dell and Sonya have proved to be wonderful parents. Their philanthropic journey inspired Stephen Curry and his wife Ayesha to follow the same path. They founded the Eat.Learn.Play foundation in 2019 to give back to the community that did so much for them.
