LeBron James beamed with pride when his son Bronny decided to enroll at the University of Southern California last year. LeBron himself did not attend college so he was particularly happy to see Bronny get afforded that opportunity. Moreover, the young James would play collegiate basketball for the USC Trojans men’s basketball team. Everything was in place and LeBron was thrilled beyond measure.

But just two months after enrollment, Bronny suffered an unexpected cardiac arrest at the Galen Center in USC during a practice session on the 24th of July. He was rushed to the hospital at once and underwent surgery to treat a congenital heart defect. Bronny was finally released from the hospice on the 27th of July. Recalling the dreadful day, the USC Trojans coach Andy Enfield and teammates praise Bronny for remaining positive throughout the life-changing experience.

The coach and other teammates were all present in the arena when Bronny suffered the cardiac arrest. Afterward, they stood by him emotionally and mentally during his recovery. Witnessing everything firsthand, Enfield expresses, “I think everybody’s been through a lot emotionally. Bronny the most. And he’s handled it very well. And any time you go through an emotional situation, it’s nice to have teammates and staff that care. And the team, his teammates, did a great job with Bronny.”

Moreover, Bronny’s senior teammates Boogie Ellis and DJ Rodman credit him for putting up a strong front after experiencing a life-threatening health scare. Ellis even reveals a humorous side of Bronny, “[We] talked to him every day, in the Snapchat group chat, he’s always cracking jokes and stuff like that.” Rodman, a senior forward for the Trojans also tips his hat to Bronny for embodying positivity during a difficult part of his life. “[Bronny’s] just a very positive guy, and every time I see him, it’s just a big smile,” he says.

Bronny’s NBA dream on halt

Although Bronny James was not eligible for last year’s NBA draft, it was widely believed that he would be selected this year. It would also coincide with LeBron’s dream to play with his eldest son in the big league. However, when ESPN removed his name from the list of the NBA mock draft 2024, it seemed like that dream had to wait.

Instead, Bronny’s name was added to the 2025 mock draft list as the No.39 pick. His health scare last year may have influenced this decision. After all, even his collegiate debut had to be pushed back to 10th December after doctors cleared him to get back into the court. Regardless, it would give Bronny ample time to hone his skills because currently, NBA scouts are still on the fence about his potential.
