During Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals last year, Madison Square Garden was left with a broken heart. But Martha Stewart also left with a broken bone, courtesy of the New York Knicks captain, Jalen Brunson. Close to a year later, the lifestyle guru finally hilariously confronted the 29-year-old, who had no idea about the injury.

“You don’t sweat, your arm was cold,” Stewart told Brunson on the Roommates Show podcast on the March 26 episode. “You had fallen, and you jumped up really fast. I remember saying to you, ‘It’s okay.’ You had no idea that you had hurt me. I didn’t say you hurt me, but I said, ‘It’s okay.'” The 84-year-old lifestyle guru later added while laughing, “It wasn’t okay at all”.

Stewart knew immediately her toe was broken, but the game went into overtime. Meaning she had to control her agonizing pain for longer. The television personality also confirmed her visit to New York City’s Hospital for Special Surgery on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. The doctor confirmed it was a fracture, Stewart joked, “They’ve named it the Stewart-Brunson fracture. I have an X-ray, and I’m going to leave you a picture of it. It was actually a break, so anyway, it’s better now. It took one year to heal.”

Jalen Brunson admitted that he still doesn’t feel ‘too great’ about the incident nearly a year later. In fact, Martha Stewart would continue the joke and put the Knicks star under further embarrassment. “Have you broken anyone else’s toes?” she joked. Brunson replied, “Not that I know of.” While Jalen had no idea about the injury, his parents knew.

Jalen Brunson made amends for the unfortunate injury

Martha admitted that she felt immediately that something was broken. Since the game was going on, there was no time for her to tell the 3x All-Star about the injury. However, she did speak with his parents, including his dad and former Knicks player turned assistant coach, Rick Brunson, and they thought it was “so funny.”

The takeaway from the game was not to wear open-toed footwear for any basketball matchup. The revelation about the injury came during The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon in December 2025. That’s when Martha Stewart also explained that Brunson had called over FaceTime and even sent a basketball for her grandson.

The Knicks are set for another postseason action as they have clinched another playoff season, the first one under the head coach Mike Brown. The 49-28 record displays their inconsistent season. But if Martha makes another trip for MSG, she now knows the correct footwear to avoid another year of injury time.
