Despite leading the Golden State Warriors to a narrow 113-112 victory over the Phoenix Suns, big man Draymond Green landed in the headlines for not what happened during the match, but after it ended. This time, a video has surfaced showing him screaming at the NBA veteran Kevin Durant moments after scoring 15 points, grabbing 7 rebounds, and dishing out 9 assists.

The video shows him yelling at Durant as soon as the game ended. He pumps his chest and appears to say, “It’s me… It’s me.” It’s safe to say the game was a rather intense one. But what ignited Green’s outburst this time?

What may have triggered Green?

After a neck-and-neck battle with the Suns, Stephen Curry came in hot with back-to-back three-pointers including two deep 24-footers. Following an unsuccessful attempt to guard Jusuf Nurkic, Green taunted him with a “too small” gesture while the Suns held a 74-70 lead. Green retaliated by scoring two points against a struggling Nurkic and taunted him right back with the same jab. This isn’t a new beef. It dates back to Green’s December suspension. Albeit, this was their first encounter ever since.

It’s the 4th quarter now, and the game goes sideways. After Jonathan Kuminga attempted a layup with his team down by two, Kevin Durant blocked him, sending the ball into Bradley Beal’s hands. Draymond tried and failed to steal the ball from Beal’s tight grip. Commentators: “What a rejection from Kevin Durant!”. Despite being a “Booker Barrage” in the 4th quarter, Curry strikes again with a winning 29-ft 3-pointer, taking his team to 113 with 0.7 seconds to go.

Thought the game was over? Well, you’re wrong! Wiggins fouled for an “illegal contact”, resetting the game clock to 0.6 seconds with Phoenix’s ball. In that last half a second, KD was being guarded by big man Green, and with the buzzer going off, Green deflected the pass and the Warriors secured a thrilling victory! The intensity was evident throughout the game, with neither team leading by more than seven points.

So, what exactly did Green say to Durant?

The ever-composed Kevin Durant, in his post-game interview, opened up about the game’s closing seconds. From calling Curry one of the top five players of all time to stating how that one steal could’ve avoided their defeat, KD covered it all.

About Green, the NBA veteran said, “You can put hands on people late in the game like that. It is what it is, 0.6 seconds. It’s tough to get anything off.” When asked by a reporter about Green’s last words to KD, he clarified, “You can read his lips. Something like, “it’s me, it’s me”. I guess he’s saying don’t go at him late in a game like that. You know, he was just pumping himself up, that’s what he does, like I said with 0.6 seconds…he was gonna make a play there..that’s his game.”

Durant added that at that point, Green was in a better position with the Warriors having the lead and little time left. “We had the clock working against us… It is easy for him to look good in that situation,” he added.

Sitting in 10th place in the Western Conference, the Golden State Warriors clung to their playoff hopes and avoided getting swept up by the Phoenix Suns. While the Warriors are now on a 6-1 winning streak out of their last 7 games, the Suns had their 3-game winning streak broken.

Draymond Green’s strong performance was mostly eclipsed by the infamous trash talk that he so thoroughly enjoys. While he did deliver for the Warriors in this game, the question remains: can he channel his intensity without letting it boil over?
