In its 77-years of history, the only constant in the NBA has been change. The NBA has constantly evolved and innovated, which has made it a more enjoyable product for the viewers. The NBA is again witnessing another generational shift. But, when WNBA icon Becky Hammon highlighted this by using Jalen Brunson as an example, she encountered significant backlash.
However, NBA legend Isiah Thomas came to her defense. The 62-year-old legend backed Hammon’s claims, and further provided his opinions on the subject matter.

Thomas agrees with Hammon’s claims
WNBA legend and Hall of Famer, Becky Hammon, recent comments about Jalen Brunson have enraged a lot of Knicks fans. Hammon said, “I can’t put him (Brunson) in a LeBron (James), Steph, (Joel) Embiid, type of 1A tier player, and that if your best player is the smallest player on the court, you (probably) won’t win a CHAMPIONSHIP”. Her comments have opened a Pandora’s box of varied opinions.
Facts @BeckyHammon sadly this game historically does favor the Taller, stronger athlete and when smaller sized people have success, it is more impressive in my opinion. The 1A player has historically been taller players than myself or Steph we are the outliers. https://t.co/JpXpKdJu6R

However, NBA legend and Detroit icon, Isiah Thomas, agrees with Hammon. Thomas expressed his opinion through X (formerly Twitter). He wrote, “Facts Becky Hammon sadly this game historically does favor the Taller, stronger athlete and when smaller sized people have success it is more impressive in my opinion. The 1A player has historically been taller players than myself or Steph we are the outliers.”
Both, Thomas and Hammon, are spot on with their observations. The NBA, for years, has been dominated by taller players. However, things changed when the Warriors won the 2015 NBA title, with Stephen Curry as their star player. Point guards suddenly became the best players on the team. But, the NBA is again at the precipice of change, as talented and multi-faceted forwards and centers like Jokic, Embiid and Giannis take over the NBA. The success of rookie big-men like Chet Holmgren and Victor Wembanyama serves as a clear indication of the evolving landscape in the NBA world. Stephen Curry stood as a genuine outlier in every aspect within the modern NBA.
