A family of athletes is not new in the NBA. But three brothers playing together in the league, and a sister, a former US National Team soccer legend. That’s the Holiday family in a nutshell. Aaron, Justin, and Jrue Holiday are continuing to prove their worth as pro basketball players. And Lauren is the first player in NWSL history to have her jersey retired. Naturally, the credit for their success goes to their parents, who, not so shockingly, were also standout college athletes.

Starting with his father, Shawn Holiday, who played college basketball at Arizona State. Meanwhile, Jrue’s mother, Toya, a former Pac-10 Player of the Year, was a standout for Arizona State’s women’s basketball team. Now that we have this information, let’s dive deeper into the family roots and background.

Where is Jrue Holiday from? What’s the Celtics star’s nationality?

Jrue Randall Holiday is an American professional basketball player, and according to his college profile, he was born in Mission Hills, California. All his young hoop roots can be connected to California. His hometown is North Hollywood, California, and his college basketball career was with the UCLA Bruins men’s basketball team. Even in his high school days, he attended Campbell Hall School (Studio City, CA), where he earned the 2008 Gatorade National Player of the Year and a 2008 Parade Magazine All-American first team.

His success was even on display on the international stage. Not just winning the recent Gold Medal for USA basketball in the Paris Olympics, but he already has another gold up his sleeve. During the 2024 Olympics, Holiday averaged 7.6 points, 1.6 rebounds, and 3.6 assists in 18.8 minutes. He was also part of the 2020 U.S. Men’s Olympic Team where he played in all six games, started in five games, and averaged 25.7 minutes.

There is no mention of the Celtics guard’s ethnicity. But the 2x NBA champion has always been a strong supporter of promoting black business. Jrue and his wife have been known for supporting black businesses in the past, with the help of JLH Fund in 2020. It’s their nonprofit and supports Black and Brown communities, not just with funding. But with weekly coaching sessions, software and technical assistance, and access to other funding sources.

His ability to give back can be traced to his faith. It’s not just the 34-year-old who wholeheartedly believes in it, but even his mother has, many times, expressed herself by citing her faith.

Is Jrue Holiday a Christian?

Jrue Holiday is a Christian. He has said, “I’m a Christian athlete who has faith in Jesus Christ. So when I encounter circumstances over which I have no control, I believe and have peace.” Shawn and Toya raised their children on organic growth values, and most importantly, prioritizing spiritual growth in the form of Christianity. Bible verses dominate Justin’s Twitter feed. Even Toya once shared her beliefs after seeing the growth of her children.

She sees her family’s success as a blessing. “I believe it’s a lot of prayer. It’s God’s gift,” she said after watching one of Jrue’s games. She’s not shy about it, either. “One of the Scriptures we stand on is in Deuteronomy… God said that if you keep my commandments, I will bless you.” And Toya really believes her kids carry that belief, too. Even Jrue Holiday’s father is very humble and ndoes ot take the success of his children for granted.

“It’s a blessing, you’re lucky if you get one,” he said. “To have three, it’s unthinkable.” That humility is the foundation of this family. And it’s clear Jrue hasn’t forgotten where he came from.
