What is Luka Doncic’s Ethnicity?
Luka Doncic is ethnically Slovenian with Serbian heritage. He was born on February 28th, 1999, in Ljubljana, Slovenia, to his father, Sasa Doncic, and his mother, Mirjam Poterbin. Mirjam is Slovenian, whereas Sasa is of Serbian descent, holds Slovenian citizenship, and has roots in Kosovo. Doncic grew up surrounded by basketball, mainly because his father played professionally and later became a coach, influencing his early development.
Luka began playing at just seven years old with his local club, Union Olimpija. By the time he was a preteen, he was already competing with older players, showcasing composure beyond his years and extremely advanced court vision. Doncic attended school in Slovenia while playing for Olimpija, but then made a life-changing decision.
At age 13, Doncic moved to the youth academy of Real Madrid Baloncesto in Spain, rather than taking the US college route like many NBA players. He turned pro early, competing in the European leagues as a teenager, accelerating his growth.
What is Luka Doncic’s Religion?
Luka Doncic comes from a Christian family background, with Slovenia predominantly Roman Catholic and Serbia following Eastern Orthodoxy. Given his mixed heritage, Doncic was likely exposed to both traditions during his upbringing.
However, the Lakers star has kept his reliefs private. He hasn’t made many public statements about his faith or religious practices. Though he has been seen wearing a cross necklace on some occasions, he hasn’t spoken frequently about his religion in interviews.
For Doncic, faith appears to be a much more personal matter. His focus remains on basketball and representing his country at the highest level.

His performances on the international stage have already solidified his status as a national icon back home.
“The key feedback that I get from him is exceptional,” Slovenian coach Aleksander Sekulic said about Doncic. “He is respectful. A bit too formal at times, but this is Luka. I can say that I never once got the feeling that playing for the national team was unnecessary for him. On the contrary, his attitude is extraordinary.”
