What is Seth Curry’s ethnicity?

On taking a first look at the Curry brothers side by side, one would assume they have European roots because of their white complexion. Many casual fans, especially those new to basketball, often guess Steph and Seth’s ethnicity incorrectly. But the reality is pretty different. They trace back their roots to both African-American and Haitian ancestry through their parents, infact it is their mother’s side that is more versatile.

Seth’s father, Dell Curry, who was with the Charlotte Hornets, is African-American and grew up in Fort Defiance, Virginia. His mother, Sonya Curry, brings another layer to the family’s heritage: her father, Cleive Adams, was African-American, and her mother, Candy Adams, was born in Haiti in the 1940s before moving to Virginia. That Haitian Creole lineage, combined with African-American roots, means Seth carries a diverse identity, African-American and Haitian Creole, which links Southern U.S. traditions with Caribbean heritage.

Which high school did Seth Curry attend?

Seth Curry attended the Charlotte Christian School in Charlotte, North Carolina. It was the same school his brother Steph Curry attended. He was part of the Basketball team of the school for three years, and scored 22 points per game. His high school team posted a 105-24 record. They reached the state finals in 2006, when Seth was still underclassman, proving the team had sustained success. Also worth noting: Seth was on the school’s academic honour roll all four years. He graduated in 2008.

Stephen Curry had already began his NBA career while Seth Curry got into Liberty University for college. He averaged 20.2 points per game, leading all freshmen in the nation in scoring. He chose to wear the same No. 30 jersey his dad Dell and brother Steph made famous. But his stay at LU did not last long.

After one year, he transferred to Duke University, but it cost a year as the NCAA rules forced him to sit out the 2009-10 season. When he finally got on the court, he knew he belonged. At Duke, he grew into a starter, dropped a career-high 31 points in one game, and by senior year he earned All-ACC First Team honors and was named a Second-Team All-American. But even after all this, he faced an unfortunate set back.

Seth went undrafted in the 2013 NBA Draft. He signed briefly with the Golden State Warriors, but was waived before the season began. By that time, Steph was already in his 4th NBA season. Seeing his older brother, Seth refused to give up, instead he worked it out in the NBA D-League (now G-League) with the Santa Cruz Warriors, dropping 36 points in his debut.

He did ultimately get to NBA with short stints around the Memphis Grizzlies in 2014. Then Cleveland Cavaliers followed in 2014 with a 10 day contract. It was a continuous back and forth within the teams until his persistence paid off in 2015 when he landed a two-year deal with the Sacramento Kings.

He spent the 2016 season with the Dallas Mavericks, a team that would give him a chance to prove himself. He quickly found his rhythm, showing off the sharpshooting that had become his trademark. In November 2016, he scored a career-high 23 points twice, signaling that he was ready to take on a bigger role.

By January 2017, Seth recorded 24 points and 10 rebounds in a win against the Spurs, demonstrating he could contribute in multiple ways. A month later, he set a new career high with 31 points, solidifying his place as one of Dallas’s most reliable perimeter threats.

Unfortunately, adversity struck the following season gain. Seth missed the entire 2017-18 campaign due to a leg injury that required surgery on his left leg. After recovering, Seth signed with the Portland Trail Blazers on July 6, 2018. In Portland, he regained his shooting touch and continued to make an impact. In January 2019, he scored 22 points in a standout game and was selected to compete in the Three-Point Contest during the NBA All-Star Weekend, showcasing his elite long-range ability.

Portland’s playoff run carried them all the way to the Western Conference Finals, where Seth Curry went head-to-head with Stephen, against the Golden State Warriors. It was the first time siblings had squared off in an NBA postseason series. By 2019, Seth found himself back in Dallas on a four-year deal, but his journey took another turn in November 2020 when he was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers, a team coached by his father-in-law, Doc Rivers.

This unique dynamic brought both family and professional support to the court. In the 2021 playoffs, Seth excelled, scoring 30 points in a game against the Wizards and setting a playoff career high of 36 points against the Hawks. But, his journey with every team has been time constrained and never long term.

Seth was traded to the Brooklyn Nets on February 10, 2022, as part of a blockbuster deal involving James Harden.

Ultimately by 2023, Seth was with the Dallas Mavericks for a third stint before being traded to his hometown Charlotte Hornets on February 8, 2024. Despite being waived and re-signed, Seth kept performing at a high level. In October 2024, he scored 15 points in a game, and by the 2024–25 season, he led the entire NBA in three-point shooting percentage, a crowning achievement reflecting years of persistence and growth.

How has Seth Curry’s family influenced his life and career

The grind had finally paid off for Seth. By the 2022-23 season, Seth was one of the league’s deadliest shooters. That year, he finished No. 1 in the NBA in three-point percentage at 45.6%, claiming a title even his brother Steph never had. And everyone is his family rejoiced.

His mother, Sonya Curry, wrote on Instagram: “I’m so proud of you @sdotcurry! You continue to excel and leave your mark on the NBA in your own way and in your own time! You have forged an impressive career through resilience and hard work!”

His father, Dell, who lovingly calls him his “golfing buddy,” saw it as a legacy moment. Both father and son had now led the league in shooting. Seth himself reflected: “I’ve been in the top five a lot of times in my career, but I’ve never finished the year No. 1. It’s a testament to consistent work ethic and being ready. It’s a great accomplishment, something me and my dad have now, and Steph does not have.”

And Steph, the big brother, gave him credit but couldn’t resist the sibling rivalry: “Obviously, doing right by the Curry name… but if I remember correctly, the last time we played horse, I beat you. So I’m going to take that crown.”

Appreciation came from outside the family as well. Charlotte Hornets coach Charles Lee said: “To achieve that after all the work he’s put in throughout his whole career, I’m very happy for him. I’m grateful for everything he’s given to our team as that veteran leader.”

After an 11-year-long NBA journey across nine teams, Seth Curry is finally back on the same court as his brother, Stephen Curry. Behind this reunion lies years of relentless hard work, perseverance, and the unwavering support of his glorious family. Now, as he steps into his role with the Warriors, it is a celebration of his journey shaped by family, resilience, and the spirit of the game.
