The 2024 NBA All-Star Game is approaching, and the league revealed the competitors for this year’s competitions, which include the Skills Challenge. The participants feature a host of emerging young players and All-Stars from the league who are divided into three teams – Team Top Picks, Team Pacers, and Team All-Stars. The Top Picks team features rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama, Anthony Edwards, and last year’s rookie of the year Paolo Banchero.

Team All-Stars have Trae Young, Tyrese Maxey, and Scotty Barnes. While the Pacers feature Tyrese Haliburton, Myles Turner, and Bennedict Mathurin. Being the hometown team, Pacers are expected to be a crowd favorite, but the squad featuring Wembanyama could be the leading contender to win the event.

This has brought attention to the Kia Skills Challenge which comprises three rounds, during which three teams compete against each other, aiming to accumulate a specific number of points through various tasks. In the previous year, the three events in the Skills Challenge included a team relay, team passing, and team shooting competitions. Following the completion of Round 3, the team with the highest total points is crowned the Skills Challenge champions.

The Skills Challenge emphasizes testing players in passing, dribbling, and shooting, areas where Wemby excels. It is also noteworthy that in the previous two All-Star Weekends, the all-Cavaliers team emerged victorious in the Skills Challenge before their home crowd in Cleveland, and the all-Jazz team secured the win in front of their fans in Utah. Does this suggest that the Pacers will hold the advantage in this year’s competition?

Who is participating in the other competitions?

In the last decade, the NBA three-point contest has been one of the main attractions of All-Star Weekend, this year is nothing different. Damian Lillard, Donavan Mitchell, Jalen Brunson, Trae Young and Tyrese Haliburton are the major stars participating in the event. Lillard is positioned as the frontrunner for this year’s 3-Point Contest, having clinched the title in the previous season. While his current deep shooting percentage with the Bucks stands at 34.7%, it’s essential to note his career average of 37.1% from beyond the arc.
