Despite their current limitations, the Spurs fanbase can look to the future with hope and optimism. Victor Wembanyama’s addition has completely rejuvenated the San Francisco franchise. The San Antonio Spurs won the Wembanyama sweepstakes when they were awarded the 1st pick in the 2023 NBA Draft. Wembanyama came into the league as one of the most hyped draft prospects since LeBron James in 2003. Many people were skeptical of Victor’s talents. However, Wembanyama has hit the ground running in the NBA. He has wasted no time in proving his doubters wrong, signing a four-year rookie contract worth $55 million. But, Victor is slated to receive around $12 million, this season.

Wembanyama is earning considerably more than his rookie peers. With the Lakers being a “big-market team”, many would expect rookies on their roster to earn considerably more. That, however, isn’t the case. Lakers’ rookie, Jalen Hood-Schifino, is earning approximately $3.6 million. Lakers’ second-round pick, Maxwell Lewis is earning around $1.1 million. Meanwhile, undrafted rookie Alex Fudge is making a modest $559,782 under a two-way contract with the Lakers.

Wembanyama’s immense talent has led to a massive difference in salaries. While the rookies on the Lakers roster observe from the bench, Wembanyama has become the cornerstone of the Spurs franchise.

Wembanyama has hit the ground running in the NBA. Despite the immense hype surrounding him, Wemby hasn’t let expectations weigh him down. He has averaged 18.9 points, 9.7 rebounds and 2.5 assists in 19 games this season.
