At a very young age, Paul noticed his son had the potential to be an athlete. As a result, he used to go around their city just to get Zach different playing equipment. “My dad would go around to the Goodwill stores all over Seattle and he’d get these cheap swimming pools, the little plastic ones with the fish on them. Then he’d get all these different types of balls, basketballs, soccer balls and I’d have like 50, 60 balls and he’d set up the pools around the backyard and I’d continually shoot, just getting my touch,” the 2× NBA Slam Dunk Contest champion once noted. It looks like Paul didn’t raise him to be a star, which he is, but also to be a beacon of hope.

Zach LaVine beyond basketball

At just 21 he was honored with the NBA Cares Community Assist Award in 2016. This recognition was largely due to his efforts with the Metro Deaf School, where he made a lasting impact. But what motivated LaVine to dedicate his time to such an important cause?

The Bulls‘ player chose the Flip Saunders Legacy Fund as the recipient of his $10,000 donation. This fund, created to honor the late coach’s memory, supports individuals and groups carrying on his positive legacy. “We are extremely grateful to Zach for this kind and generous donation. The thoughtfulness of Zach, his teammates, and the Timberwolves organization is really appreciated. It’s humbling to know that Zach has offered this to the Fund in Flip’s honor,” said Debbie Saunders, Flip’s widow. LaVine’s gesture shows his heart for charity, reflecting his deep commitment to making a difference.

As a monthly winner, LaVine became a finalist for the NBA Cares Seasonlong Award, where fan voting would determine the winner. With the prize being a $25,000 donation to the winner’s charity, it was clear that LaVine was dedicated to this cause. LaVine’s dedication to community impact extends far beyond the court.
