The 2023 FIBA World Cup co-hosted by Philippines, Japan and Indonesia has increased television viewership and filled out 55,000 capacitating arenas. Given this hype, one can only imagine the profits FIBA will yield through the global event.

This year’s FIBA World Cup has delivered every bit of excitement so far. With 32 nations participating in the tournament, the global exposure of the sport has reached an all-time high. This naturally leads to a question of how much the FIBA is earning out of this event.

Federation Internationale de Football Association or FIFA is the richest sports governing body in the world, generating a net worth of over $3.5B. FIBA on the other hand has earned a whopping net worth of $306M this year. Although among the topmost earning sports governing bodies, FIBA does not match FIFA’s revenue. However, one cannot simply write off FIBA’s tremendous success.

FIFA’s dominance can be credited to the global reach of soccer over basketball. Although basketball has increasingly expanded its reach, soccer’s hold on the global markets is impenetrable. The 2022 FIFA World Cup in fact had record-breaking numbers in terms of viewership and attendance which further elevated the sport’s global dominance.

The Final of the 2022 World Cup witnessed record-breaking viewership numbers. FIFA revealed that Lionel Messi and Team Argentina’s heroic victory in the tournament reached a global audience of 1.5 billion viewers. Furthermore, they also stated that ‘around five billion people’ engaged with the World Cup last year. On the other hand, FIBA too is on its way to make history in the basketball world this year.

During the 2023 World Cup’s very first day, a game between Team Dominican Republic and host nation, Team Philippines witnessed a record 38,115 crowd fill the Philippine Arena. This trend has only continued throughout the tournament, witnessing constant record-breaking viewership. The federation has hence carved out its position as a top earning sports governing body. But are there other federations that keep up with these giants in the sector?

Where do ITF, BWF and others rank?

Among the International Sports Federations recognised by the International Olympic Committee, FIFA and FIBA take centre-stage in terms of revenue. However, there are few other federations that keep pace with these governing bodies. Although not equivalent to their success, these federations have enjoyed their share of revenue over the years.

The International Hockey Federation or the FIH is among these top-earning international federations. The governing body earns a net worth of $12.4M. The International Tennis Federation as well is part of the top tier of revenue generators. They hold a net worth of $107M, exceeding the FIH. Badminton World Federation too, has established its position in these ranks with a $35.4M net worth.

These international federations have not paralleled the success of the FIBA or FIFA. However, they have cemented their position as top-grossing organisations. The FIBA however, has an opportunity to add to its affluence in the 2023 FIBA World Cup. Given the success of the tournament so far, there is no doubt the FIBA will skyrocket its net worth through this event.
