Matt Barrie’s Early Life and Education
Barrie was born in Scottsdale, Arizona, and developed a passion for sports media growing up, inspired by the local sports scene and iconic athletes of the area. He credited Mark Curtis, a sports anchor with Channel 12, for inspiring him, saying, “I thought, ‘Man, Mark Curtis has a really good job. He just gets to go to all these live events around Phoenix — Suns, ASU, Cardinals, Diamondbacks. What a great gig that is.”
Barrie pursued this passion at Arizona State University and earned a Bachelor of Arts in Broadcast Journalism from the Walter Cronkite School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2001. Speaking about his college, he said, “If you pick the right university, there is no question that it can help change your future. The Walter Cronkite School taught me the things I needed to pursue a successful career. It was also about the experience at Arizona State. I was in a fraternity, attended football games, went to socials and just had a lot of fun. It was the right place to teach me balance, which really helped out in the real world.”
