The emergence of the Minnesota Timberwolves has been one of the stories of the 2023-24 season. After years of frustration and despair, the Timberwolves finally possess a roster that fans can wholeheartedly support. While Anthony Edwards and Karl Anthony-Towns have garnered most of the plaudits, one of the primary reasons behind the T-Wolves’ resurgence is veteran forward Kyle Anderson.
Kyle Anderson’s leadership qualities were at the forefront this season. The T-Wolves finished the regular season as the 3rd seed in a fiercely competitive Western Conference and now gear up to face the Phoenix Suns in the opening round of the playoffs. But despite his NBA stardom, not a whole lot is known about Kyle Anderson’s personal life. So, here’s what little we know.
Kyle Anderson was born on 20th September 1993 in New York. He’s married to Crystal Marie Oquendo, tying the knot at an intimate ceremony in 2022 in the Bahamas. Crystal is said to have graduated from New Jersey City University but nothing much is known beyond. They reportedly met during Anderson’s high school years in New Jersey and have been in a relationship since 2011. Then over a decade later, the Timberwolves’ point guard shared pictures of his wedding on his official Instagram account with the caption, “wedded my bestfriend in 2022.”

Anderson even arranged a very special engagement ceremony at Amangiri in the Navajo region of Arizona. They enlisted the help of professional photographer Haley Nord to capture the special moments of the engagement. On her official website, Nord recounted the meticulous planning and attention to detail Crystal and Kyle Anderson put into making the engagement perfect. She wrote, “Crystal & Kyle arranged for a private guide through Amangiri, which meant that we had these slots all to ourselves.” In 2020, they also celebrated the arrival of their baby boy, Kameron Leon Anderson.
Kyle Anderson’s unique ancestry
Kyle Anderson has spent most of his life in the United States of America. However, he isn’t a US citizen. In 2023, Kyle received citizenship in China when he decided to represent the nation on the world stage. Kyle Anderson’s eligibility to represent China in basketball stems from his Chinese ancestry through his maternal great-grandfather. He even visited Shenzhen with his mother back in 2018 in order to be added to his family’s genealogical tree, which was considered long-lost.

Suzanne, who had a Jamaican mother, had a lingering feeling of the family extension due to her Chinese features, dug up for years to find her lineage. She traced her not-much-known grandfather Samuel’s descent to finally find the truth and let Anderson confirm he was one-eighth Chinese.
